“Too pricey!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 21, 2011

We stayed in cabin suite #1 and it was just ok - was expecting mid-century modern decor but it only went so far - in that there was some, but not everything and that cheapened the look of what was authentic. At $300 a night we expected a little more- ok, a lot more really. It was a great location with an amazing farm stand across the street and good hiking in the area, but again the price tag was ridiculous.

Room Tip: cabin suite #1 had one bathroom located inside one of the bedrooms and that bathroom door had a cut...

We stayed in one of the suites for three nights at the end of September. Alarm bells started ringing when we arrived just after four in the afternoon to find the place deserted. We tried ringing the numbers on the office door but only got answerphone messages. A short walk around the site quickly revealed the place had been devastated in the hurricane at the end of August. Everything close to the creek had been wrecked in what must have been a biblical flood. There was just one Airstream trailer, which had been utterly trashed. The hot-tub, which we had been looking forward to using was full of mud. I eventually stumbled upon an employee - Zee - who was able to give us access to our suite. It was nice enough, but the fact that no-one from the motel thought to get in touch and tell us what had happened. Or tell us that the nearest big town had also been badly affected by the hurricane, or that the steam railway had been swept away, left us stunned. To make matters worse, we were charged full whack: $810 for three nights. I've just checked the website and still no mention of the damage inflicted by the hurricane.

If you're adventurous, and not averse to something that is cute, quirky and off the beaten path, then Kate's is absolutey brilliant. We got a beautiful room on short notice, just after hurricane Irene made a complete mess of the area, but it was peaceful and beautiful, and my bf and I wish we'd stayed longer. We stayed in Suite #8, and it was quirky and cool, great kitchen, secluded deck, inside it was spacious but still cozy at night, with a selection of videos out-there enough for two cinephiles to be spoiled for choice. If you have time, take a wander around the area, Kate's neighbors are equally cool! There's an art shop/studio where rocketships and dinosaurs are fashioned from classic car parts 5 minutes down the road, a local grocery/farmer's market right across from Kate's and the creek makes for an easy hike. It was on the outer limits of our budget, but we were happy to splurge a little and I think it is great value for money if you go mid-week. I would go back in a heartbeat (and plan to).

Room Tip: suites 7 and 8 share a deck, facing the forest, but if you go back in 2012 they'll have the airs...

I found Kate's Lazy Meadow online, browsing for an inviting place to stay during my first trip to the Catskill region. A friend and I had a lovely drive down from Toronto, and were thrilled with Cabin Suite #2 -- I couldn't resist asking for the one with the teal blue kitchen. The cabin was more than comfortable, the beds inviting, the decor whimsical but soothing, the kitchen more than well stocked, likewise the 'entertainment centre' with TV, movies, games, magazines and books.

Carmon was welcoming, and I quite like that one is fairly left alone. Esopus Creek, which i would call a river even when it isn't flooding -- I'll get to that in a sec! -- is beautiful to look at, the stars at night are spectacular in late August, and the location very handy to lovely, funky little Phoenicia, intriguing towns like Fleischmanns, and loads of breathtaking scenery.

Ahh Mother Nature -- we happened to arrive the day before Irene well and truly hit the east coast, and she hit upstate a lot harder than anyone had expected. We had to evacuate (because the roads were becoming more and more impassable and dangerous -- the suites were fine, though the office got rather flooded and mud-caked), and returned after a day in Kingston to watch the trees lash about in the winds that characterized the last bit of the storm. The power was out (all over the area), but the cabin was thoroughly comfortable for another night and morning anyway, with purchased water and candles and flashlights. But Irene made us cut our stay short, and the owners were more than understanding, Monica gave us a stellar recommendation for another place to stay in the Hudson Valley, and we were refunded for the nights we couldn't stay pretty much as soon as the power was back up.

A treat, part cottage, part funky trailer park, can't wait to go back.

The property was small, but nice. The price was a bit high for what the room was. The shower was terrible -- poor water pressure and the water stunk horribly of rotten eggs. When I complained, the problem was not fixed, nor was I offered a discount, which would have been appropriate. It seemed the manager did not care.

My husband, sister and I went for a quick weekender. We loved it! Our cabin was beautifully decorated. The kitchen was entirely in PINK! You could make a turkey dinner if you wanted to. We saw bunnies on the property and the plunge pool was divine. Would love to go back in the winter! See you soon Lazy Meadow!

We love Kate's! If you've never been it's definitely a destination. Every room feels like the set of the "Love Shack" video and it's just a very fun place to settle into for the weekend. It's overpriced, but it's that charming that we still end up going back for more.
