My husband and I and two children spent 4 days at the Wavecrest last summer. When we arrived we found the bathroom very dirty (hair all over the floor, toilet, sink and walls and a dirt ring around the bathtub). I called the front desk and they sent the cleaning girl to clean the bathroom. She came and left within 3 minutes. She must have had a problem seeing because when I went to check the bathroom it was still dirty. I called her back again and again it was again not cleaned properly. I went to the store and bought my own cleaning products and cleaned the bathroom myself. Over the years we have probably stayed at the Wavecrest about 7 times and never had this problem before. I feel that if you are paying top dollar (in my opinion) you should at least have a clean room. The location is wonderfull and the beach is beautiful. Next time we go to Montauk I will probably try somewhere else.

my then-fiance/now-husband and i booked this place for our honeymoon for a week. by the end of our stay we decided we loved it, but "technically" we were disappointed with Wavecrest.... we loved it because it was super quiet, and very secluded and private, which was our goal and clearly conducive to a relaxing, lounge-y honeymoon. but we were disappointed because there were seriously NO amenities and the staff were horribly unhelpful and rude.

in short:

LOVED - isolation from tourists- private quiet beach, proximity to water, lazy environment, and the fact that since we were so far from town we were forced to be creative with our nights and not always go into town and "do stuff".
DIDNT LOVE - no cell reception, no wifi or internet of any kind, they charge by the minute to use their phone even for local calls, you're far from civilization- only a couple places delivers that far, they didn't provide any type of room service- no coffee, no late night snacks, only a vending machine, and staff were super unhelpful and unfriendly.

more detailed reasons:

PROS
after we checked in when we arrived, they drove us to our beach dune studio on a little golf cart, since it was down a decent sized hill and we had luggage-- driven by a beach bumming old guy smoking a stogy, pretty entertaining. our room was clean, everything was fine. we had a beautiful ocean view, and were so close the waves were actually loud, it was awesome-- we'd leave our sliding door open at night and fall asleep to them. they have a round dining table inside, and a little dinette/lounge chair set outside on your patio-- both which we used and found nice to have that option. we had plenty of clean towels and could request if they cleaned the room or not, changed the sheets or not, etc., depending on if we were going to be around or wanted them disturbing us or not. the beaches were nearly always empty, and every time we laid around on them we were at least 50+ yards away from anyone else in any given direction. lots of privacy. and some teenager will haul your lounge chairs to any part of the beach for you on his cart. another nice side effect of staying here, is that you get to be more creative with your time, since you can't just pop into town. so we played board games, took naps, lounged on the beach, played cards in our lounge chairs, made ourselves little dinners, built a fire, and got drunk together one night. we'd also stock our little fridge with breakfast food stuff and eat outside while watching the waves. it was perfect.

CONS
the afternoon we arrived (all bright eyed and bushy tailed, being just married the previous night) were hardly greeted hello, let alone given congratulatory wishes after we told them we were there for our honeymoon. a big let down considering every-single-person we'd come in contact by then would say SOMETHING happy to us. we also had to pay a refundable deposit on our tv remote control (pretty dumb). the cleaning lady was often found in our room when we would return home in the afternoon if we went out, which was annoying, because either we'd have to sit around and wait awkwardly while she finished, or make her leave and WE'd have to finish, both equally a nuisance. we didn't get any cell phone reception and had to stand at the top of the hill on the side of the main road just to get a couple bars (we had sprint at the time). and because we were so far from town, only a few random places deliver, all of which you have to call individually because you also don't get internet there(!!!!!)-- probably the biggest surprise and irritant of them all (although, we were happy in the end, because then we weren't tempted to get on and be distracted by email at any point, which is refreshing). so since we didn't have internet or cell phones and were calling all these places... we found out at the end of the week, they had charged us!! even though they were local calls!! super annoying. anyway, we were pretty much forced to rent a moped to save on the cost of getting into town via taxi and back (which was actually loads of fun and highly romantic and something we wanted to do even before we knew we had to do it, but it sucks for those who wouldn't have transportation and wouldn't want to rent a moped). so we were forced to either ride into town with our moped every time we wanted "real food" (not mini-fridge, microwave food), or fork up money for a taxi to and from a restaurant, if we wanted to drink. days into our stay, we finally decide to turn on the tv, to see what the weather was going to be... didn't work. we called the front desk, who of course wasn't helpful or nice about it, saying they didn't have anyone around who could help us, but then after us complaining about it, and by the time they were going to send someone over, it suddenly started working again. apparently it just takes a loooong time to warm up.

also to note: it's difficult to book because every time you want to call, you have to leave a message and wait daaays to get a return call, simply because they're closed over winter and rarely check their messages. also, you must make it very clear that you definitely want a call back (like if you're making sure they got your deposit check-- don't just leave your info, cause then they'll confirm, but not inform you-- you must say you want a call back to actually get a call back).

We stayed in a "Watersedge Suite" (second closest building from the ocean). It was AMAZING hearing the roaring of the ocean as we sat on our balcony and slept at night with the sliding doors cracked open. The view was excellent as well with nothing but ocean in the distance.

As is expected, much of the price for booking a room in Montauk goes toward the beachfront view and access not on room amenities. This was the case with us. We knew (as we've stayed at other resorts on eastern Long Island) that upscale rooms were not likely, but we were a bit bothered with the state of our room. The carpet was filthy, we kept our socks/flip-flops on the whole time walking around, and our sock bottoms would turn dirty quickly. What was unfortunate was that other rooms on our floor had tile or hardwood floors, no carpet, but we weren't one of them. I guess that's something they'll upgrade as soon as they hear enough complaints about a specific room. The place was booked that weekend, so we couldn't change rooms, but overall it wasn't a huge deal, just something I felt was worth mentioning. There were also random pieces of molding missing around the room, not sure why. Even with that said, other than that and the carpet, the room overall was clean and cleaned well each day we stayed.

The beach was nice with plenty of room and chairs available throughout the day. They did have to take the chairs away from us by 5pm even after we suggested we'd bring them back ourselves.

It was about a 3-5 minute drive to downtown Montauk. It was nice being outside of the busiest part of town, but if you desire a coffee or bite to eat quickly, this may not be the best choice for you. We did have a small kitchen area in our room so we were able to bring back snacks to store away and heat up as needed.

Overall, if your main concern is having a nice beach to relax on, this is good place to go, if you're looking for more upscale amenities good luck finding something that won't cost a ton of money around Montauk, the options are limited!

My wife just called wavecrest to book a room. She was told they have a room available for the time we wanted and the price was reasonable. Great! Then she asked if they have a crib available for our 15 month old son. The front desk said yes they do, but then put her on hold for a minute and came back and very rudely said the room was no longer available, sorry. Funny how everything changed once they found out we would have a child with us... Obviously, they have a real problem with small children so don't even consider this hotel if you have kids!

My family of 4 just returned from several days at the Wavecrest. We have a great weekend. The Wavecrest provided us with everything we were looking for. We stayed in the Edgewater section in a studio room. The rooms are OK... clean, an updated bathroom and small efficiency kitchen with a microwave, small refigerator and range top stove., two double beds. Nothing fancy but it was fine. A private deck overlooking the beach was really great. The deck had two chairs, two lounge chairs and a table so the whole family was able to sit and admire the surf. The best part about the Wavecrest was the beach. It was so peaceful and secluded. The resort was filled to the capacity but the beach was not crowded at all. My husand and children were able to fish right there, a few feet away from where we were sitting, and they caught some big fish. One nice feature is that the resort provided you with lounge chairs, beach umbrellas and small beach towels. They have a guy who drives the lounge chairs right down the beach and sets them up for you. It was really nice not to have to lug around our beach chairs and umbrella. We had the opportunity to vist a friend who was staying at one the the resorts right in the town of Montauk. I hated the beach there. It was so crowded, with tons of people, it reminded me of Jones Beach. It lost the whole Montauk feel. I would definitely recommend the Wavecrest and will certainly go back again.

My boyfriend and I just returned from a long weekend at the Wavecrest. Here are my impressions:
- The grounds are lovely with lots of flower and beautiful ocean views everywhere you look. Everything appears clean and well kept. There is space for barbecuing and picnicking although we never used them.
- Access to the beach is easy and convenient. You just walk down a winding path and you are there. The hotel provides lots of chairs and umbrellas, it is never too crowded and of course the ocean is gorgeous!
- The hotel has an indoor heated pool. It is clean and there are lots of extra towels, but it was very small and pretty cramped.
- Our experiences with the staff were positive. Everyone in the office was friendly and helpful whenever we had a problem or concern. On the other hand, one of the maids threw out medication I left on the dresser. I only found because I dug through the garbage in a panic. This is likely an isolated incident, but be careful with any important meds you are taking with you.
- Our room was very clean with a spacious patio and a stunning, unobstructed ocean views. The view was the highlight of the room. You could see down the coast, watch the stars and moon at night, and listen to the sound of the surf and feel the sea air. However, if you are looking for luxury this room this isn’t it. The bathroom and shower stall are TINY, there is no hair dryer or toiletries, the comforter is itchy and the bed and pillows are extremely HARD and uncomfortable. In fact, the pillows are so hard that I suggest bringing your own, especially if you have bad back or neck. So basically, at the Wavecrest, the high fee is for the beach access and the great views from the rooms. If that is what you are looking for then you will be very pleased, but make sure you don’t go in expecting something luxe. Overall, our experience was positive, but I’d probably stay somewhere with rooms that are a bit nicer next time.

My husband and I have been going to Wavecrest for the last 5 years sometimes twice a year. I find the rooms to be very very clean and comfortable. This year we stayed in the Waters Edge Studio and had some friends book with us. We barbecued in the nice area by the pool 3 nights and had a great time. The water views are spectacular from any room u stay in. The staff is extremely helpful and always happy to give you information. The men who bring the chairs down have always been very very courteous. I have recommended this hotel to many people who have since gone and loved the peace and quiet. The kitchens are well equipped so bring food for breakfast and lunch so you can eat on the porch overlooking the ocean. It is a great place to destress. Only a minute to walk to ocean. We just loved it
