“Camp Hero. Very cool if you like history!”
Reviewed September 25, 2012

Camp Hero is right out at the Montauk Lighthouse. It's a place that was covered in secrets from WWII unto the break of the cold war. There are old bunkewrs that once held big guns secretly guaring the shiplanes going to NT Harbors. This was a secret army base that was set up to look like a small fishing town when looking at it from air recon. A building that is designed to look like a church was the gym.

More out building still exist as does a huge abandoned radar instalation. The bluiffs are very cool too! Not many people know of this place that is quite bare bones and nothing special to look at unless you picture yourself back in history.

There are plenty opf wild deer that hang out in this area so don't be surprised to see a few.

“for trail walkers and those interested in world war history”
Reviewed September 9, 2012

Just before entering the Montauk lighthouse parking lot, we turned off to see what significance Camp Hero had. We did nothing more than park and look as I read the literature description, but a trail system has been developed "where a bounty of wildlife may be seen in an undisturbed environment"; and the connection to the Revolutionary War, WWII and the Cold War may be of interest to some.

“Good trail runs”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

If you want a decent run along the beach and bluffs, with occassional shade, try Camp Hero. Definitely take the bug/tick spray and put it on generously. Then, enjoy!

“Hiking history”
Reviewed September 3, 2012

The old fort has lots of trails past old bunkers and other building from it's time as a military installation. Beautiful views of the coast and paths to the rocky shore make this a good adventure.

“A hidden, undeveloped gem”
Reviewed July 18, 2012

FINALLY dropped in (after passing it by for 20+ years). OMG, geological "hoodoos" as in Bryce Canyon -- but, while much smaller, framed by the Atlantic Ocean! Sea- & scrub-birds, wildflowers like crazy. Massive, concrete bunkers overgrown & lurking in the undergrowth -- creepy & exciting in a Total War kinda way. A Sci-Fi movie is begging to be filmed here, but, it's also a huge Nature Preserve to bike to & hike through.
