We travel rarely, so a lousy trip hurts. We love the charm of Bed & Breakfasts, but have had bad experiences with eccentric hosts, obtrusive help, and poor design. And we love elegant & historic places, provided they're at least kept in decent condition. The Manor, despite a few quirks, is exactly what we've wanted for a long time. It's everything we've always liked about B&Bs, with any negatives seeming petty at best.
There are some negative views posted here. They may well be valid, but it should be understood that this is not a corporate environment, not the Marriott or a Radisson or something like that. So it's not for everyone. There were aspects of our room (a good-sized 1 BR duplex with full kitchen + a dressing/vanity room) we weren't crazy about. But between the unbelievably beautiful lobby, the view, and Montauk being one of our favorite places, we could only see minor quibbles. A couple of the people who work at the Manor could've been more helpful, or friendly, or professional. But mostly it was fine so far as we were concerned.
There is a review here from 2005 that discusses the rooms with patios on the ground floor, facing west, declaring them to be the best rooms in the hotel (actually it's a condo where the units are all privately owned, which helps to explain some of what some people may not like about the place). That's where we stayed, and we'd have to agree with that post. The patios are huge, and the view unbelievable. I guess I can understand people preferring more recent renovation, or perhaps to be closer to the beach, but for us any such tradeoff is well worth it. And we will be back.
