“Great place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2006

We recenty stayed at the Montauk Manor and had an incredible great time with our family and freinds.

From the first time I called to make reservations to check out the Staff could not have been more helpful. The Lobby with its fireplaces is was just grand. We would sit in the evening with our families and play board games.

The Units were well kept and clean. One night we decided to cook our own lobsters and the staff had no problem finding a lobster pot and crackers for us.

Again a great place to stay!!!

How did we hate thee? Let me count the ways:

1. Don't go up the stairs in the first floor duplex! They won't warn you that there's a low beam at the top. Bang your head against this at your own peril, you'll literally see stars.

2. An incredibly rude and insincere staff full of unhappy workers that act like you owe them something. While we were being shown a couple of rooms before checking in we got a guy that felt we were the cause of his life's problems, and he decided to "get back" at us by turning out all the lights while we were still in the room looking. Considering it was 9:00 at night, our 5 year old was scared to death when the room suddenly became pitch dark.

3. Afterwards, when we got downstairs and suggested at the front desk that they warn people about the low ceiling, they smiled and said unsympathetically no one else had ever said anything about this before. The appropriate response would have been "Sorry about that, are you OK?" But "sorry" is not in their vocabulary. Nor do they care how one is feeling after the low beam ceiling in their room bashes you on the head.

4. You can't call for room service. After checking in we called the number for room service, and it rang about 20 times before going into voice mail. After calling the front desk, they said I needed to go downstairs to order it in person. Since they stop room service at 10:00, this meant a frantic trip downstairs to plead with them to keep the kitchen open a few more minutes.

5. When the food came, parts of the order were missing, as well as condiments like butter for the bread.

6. The toaster oven in the room was filthy and disgusting. We spent half an hour trying to clean it. Only to find out that it didn't even work. When we checked out and complained, all we got was another forced smile.

7. The shower was more like a leaky faucet. The worst water pressure we've ever experienced.

8. Two thick curtains plus no light over the tub equals very dark shower.

9. The bathroom is so tiny you have to stand on the toilet to get into the tub.

10. They still use real keys (not the electronic kind). For those of you who may not be aware of it, this is a huge security risk.
Criminals go out and make copies of these, and then go back to the hotel later when someone else is staying there and just walk
right in and do anything they want.

11. To lessen the security risk, I suppose, they gave us two keys, and one didn't work.

12. The furnishings and appliances were very modern... in the early 80's. Twenty five years later it's not just out of date, but the kitchen comes complete with peeling enamel.

13. The bedsheets didn't feel very clean.

14. The clock radio was broken.

15. In a one bedroom suite with a kitchen, there was only one phone. I wonder if the single rooms have any phones.

16. The closets come complete with somebody else's junk. Maybe that's a plus for some, for us it wasn't.

17. High speed wireless internet access... in the lobby. Wow! They spent $50 to give everyone internet access. I guess you can
check your email when you go downstairs to order room service.

18. Location location location. The only place in montauk we've found that's not on the beach.

Not worth the $300 we paid, or even the cost of the gas to get there.

This is without doubt the worst value for money I have ever encountered. The room was decorated in 1980s style (probably last decorated in the 1980s), lights not working, faulty shower head. Very dirty carpet. Very uncomfortable bed. Kids skateboarding down the corridor until 1 a.m. I have never stayed anywhere where you have to leave a $20 deposit for the iron and TV remote, though given the look of the room you kind of expected the TV to be chained to the wall. The desk staff were rude and disinterested. Bubblegum stuck to the wall in the hallway for two days. Musty smell. Bad food. Left early though still charged for the whole stay. Leaving was the best part. I'd say that unless you have a huge family of kids to entertain then try anywhere else first. The place has historic significance and is interesting for that but that is just not enough to warrant paying near $300 a night for what you could get ANYWHERE else... even a Motel 6 is more comfortable and better equipped.

We went to Montauk Manor in mid-July with another family. Our families have kids from age 11 to age 19. The hotel grounds are very nice and the lobby is also quite nice. Our room was clean, but needed updating. We stayed in a 2 bedroom/2bathroom suite. The decor was 1980's. The bathroom plumbing needed work. When we flushed the toilet, it made a loud whistling noise for about 5 minutes. The shower head in one of our bathrooms didnot work at all. The hallways of the hotel all smelled like cigarette smoke and also needed updating... could use new carpeting and wallpaper. Since it also has condos in the building, there were alot of older people there. At the pool, the kids were told not to splash or make loud noise. I just felt for $350 per night, it could have been alot nicer and more family-friendly.

Really enjoyed our stay at the Manor. Staff is cordial and helpful. Room is clean, comfortable and relaxing. Activites in the area are plentiful and enjoyable. Access to the beaches is great and the fishing is excellent. Walking is scenic. the night life is good offer a full range of activities. The town is quaint, clean and friendly.

Beautiful historic building on a hilltop with great views. Privately owned condos are rented by central management. Our condo #133 was clean, bright and sunny, and had a large patio with beautiful sunset views of the bay. It was structured as a downstairs plus sleeping loft, but with one heating/AC system for both levels. We were never able to adjust the system so that both levels were at the same temperature. Comfortable upstairs, then freezing downstairs, etc. Otherwise we were very pleased and would stay there again. Don't miss Thursday steak night at the restaurant, complete steak dinner for $17 is unbeatable value for a good cut of meat!
