“Nice view, but $9 per person & parking fee”
Reviewed July 30, 2014

Had to pay for parking & $9 to get into lighthouse. Definitely recommend going to the top if you pay, super views! Also, very educational and learned a lot about the lighthouse and it's history in the small museum. Beware though, there are 137 steps to climb. Really didn't feel that bad, but a little tight on the staircase.

“Maybe Five Stars If Not So Pricey”
Reviewed July 30, 2014

I was disappointed, upon reaching the top, not to be allowed to walk around the perimeter of its top, as in other lighthouses I've been too, particularly after having paid the hefty fee for a group of six which others have explained before me.

That said, it is a remarkable place to visit, historic and scenic, and the location is so cool at the eastern tip of Long Island. We were staying in Shelter Island for the second year in a row and this was a great part of a day trip to Hither Hills State Park for a nice day at the beach. The parking fee for Hither Hills was also good for parking at the lighthouse, though not the entrance fee to the lighthouse. The museum at the base was also quite interesting. I wouldn't travel far just to see the lighthouse, but the eastern end of Long Island is a great place to spend some time, with many charming towns and lots of beautiful waterfront and fun activities, and I'm glad to be finally discovering it after having spent my whole life in the NY metro area.

“Gorgeous view”
Reviewed July 30, 2014

It was getting late so we only had time to view the lighthouse from afar. The parking area had some swings so you could look out at "The End" of Montauk out onto the ocean beyond. Beautiful!

“A high point of our visit”
Reviewed July 30, 2014

Beautiful, scenic way to spend a day. Parking is $8 for a lot near the lighthouse which had plenty of parking. There was a restaurant and bathrooms near the parking (complete with a swinging bench to look out on the beaches!) and then a paved path to the lighthouse. We enjoyed learning about the lighthouse's role throughout the years, to include use by fishing vessels, submarine spotting, fire tower at the museum at its base. The guards/docents were quite pleasant. There was no wait on the Tuesday morning that we went which was quite a pleasant surprise. So we quickly went up the lighthouse steps to enjoy the view and then down again. There is a gift shop at the base of the lighthouse for (more) choices of souvenirs, which help the lighthouse funding.
