Oldest lighthouse in New York. There is a museum and gift shop. Very scenic, but you must go for the seals. It's quite a sight to see!

Let me start by saying that the Montauk lighthouse and its surroundings are very nice. This is probably why they have turned it into a tourist trap: $ 8 parking fee regardless of the duration of your stay (we stayed not more than one hour and parking in Amsterdam is not that expensive...) and there is nowhere else where you are allowed to park, and subsequently a $ 9 per person entrance fee to the lighthouse. The staff at the kiosk was extremely rude to some other guests both when we got in and same thing when we went out, and we ourselves didn't feel particularly welcome either. Also the staff at the lighthouse regulating the access to the top didn't really demonstrate to like their jobs. At the bottom of the lighthouse there is an interesting and well set up museum about the history and legends of the lighthouse, all other lighthouses of Long Island, and the development over the last centuries of the region and its original and current inhabitants. Again, the lighthouse, area and views from the top are very good so up to you whether that's worth the money and enduring the bad customer service of the staff.

I love the lighthouse, but you have to pay $8 to park, no matter what time of the year it now seems, and then you cant even get up to look at the lighthouse without paying another $8 per person. To me that's a little ridiculous. I remember being a kid and playing on the hill without having to pay admission for it. I understand it costs money for upkeep, but this just seems a bit excessive, especially as we had two cars and eight people, half of whom were from out of the country and excited to see the lighthouse up close. Definitely disappointing.

This amazing lighthouse has been lovingly restored and is a wonderful stop on a trip to Montauk, NY. Montauk is at the far tip of Long Island and this lighthouse was begun in 1792 under the orders of George Washington. It is a National Historic Landmark. The lighthouse has amazing views of Long Island and the coastlines of Connecticut and Rhode Island. Often there are historic reenactments during summer weekends and during the winter, walking tours are often led to see the seals that winter amongst the rocks at the shoreline.

It is rumored that Capt. Kidd buried treasure at the base of the lighthouse and also on Gardner's Island nearby.

Be sure to take a look at the exhibits and to take the stairs to the top. The climb is definitely worth it! The views are amazing!!! You can picnic on the grounds or purchase food nearby. The parking is expensive but you could really make a day of your visit exploring the many hiking trails and walking the coastline. It is absolutely pristine and you may see many painters, photographers and birders on your trip.
