I've been going to White Post for more than 20 years. It's transformed itself from a little farm stand into something one-step shy of a full-on amusement park. It's got a petting zoo, some basc rides, and a whole lot of family friendly farm-activities. Great place to go for fall activities, but be warned it can be pricey and with huge crowds.
While there's not much reason to visit most of the 'farm' without kids, there's a shop (pre-dates the rest of the attraction) which sell great sandwiches, fresh produces, plants, and 'country-style' foods.
All in all, perhaps a bit tacky, but as close to 'rural state fair' feel as you're likely to find in Melville.
