“Wonderful place”
Reviewed September 1, 2008

We've been to the tasting room before and decided to take a quick couple days off and stay a weekday night at the farmhouse. It was great. The rooms -- including the bathrooms -- are clean, simple, up-to-date and right in keeping with the farmhouse look. A lot of the stuff looks like it was purchased from Target and I mean that in a good way. In late afternoon, we spent some quiet time on the front porch with a glass of wine, reading and looking out over the fields. The owners encourage you to walk through the vineyards, so we did that and we also walked a bit through the neighborhood. This inn is off the beaten path, so you're away from the two main wine roads that can sometimes get busy. The wines are probably the best on Long Island and unlimited tasting is included in your stay, as is the wonderful and innovative breakfast (we had banana smoothies, scones and smoked duck hash). Since the inn only serves eight guests at the maximum, everyone sits around a big breakfast table at 9:30. We were fortunate to meet two great couples and we plan to stay in touch with one. Overall, this is well worth the money, especially on weekdays in the summer, when you can otherwise pay $200-$300 for a room in some fleabag motel in this area. We would definitely return.

One suggestion: we think we were dealing with the owners at various times, but they never introduced themselves. That would have been a nice and simple touch. Otherwise, it was a great experience.

  • Liked — Vineyard surroundings, farmhouse atmosphere, great wine
  • Disliked — Owners should introduce themselves. That's about it.

My husband and I were celebrating our 3 year anniversary and wanted a place that was quiet, relaxing and romantic...and the Shinn Estate Farmhouse B&B was everything we hoped for and more.

We spent two wonderful nights here and wish we could have stayed longer. We had never stayed at a B&B before, so it was much different than a hotel. We were nervous, but when we arrived we met David, one of the owners & chef, he gave us the keys to our room and we were greeted with some fresh cookies on the bed with a beautful, inviting poem.

3-6pm daily there are wine, cheese & crackers in the foyer area, so you can just help yourself whenever you'd like. Every morning at 9:30 am breakfast is served in the dining room, which is just so perfect, delicious and fresh! We had a great time meeting the other couples at breakfast too...all young couples that were very friendly and gave us good tips on restaurants and vineyards.

We stayed in Vineyard West and it was perfect, great taste in decor and so clean and very nice. Pictures on their website are identical to the way everything looks....just amazing!

We would love to visit the North Fork again and would only stay ay Shinn!

For our anniversary weekend, we stayed two lovely nights at the Shinn Farmhouse. The best room by far is Vineyard West, with beautiful views of the vines (and the sunset). The breakfasts are amazing--incredibly fresh local ingredients cooked by a fantastic chef. Sample breakfast: sunny side up duck egg with asparagus and roasted new potatoes with herbs from the garden or an omelette with heirloom tomatoes and Catapano Farm goat cheese with smoked duck hash....you are sated and ready for an afternoon of wine tasting! The hosts are wonderful, there's a wine and cheese reception each day, and the setting (North Fork Wine Country) is beautiful, serene, and relaxing. I would love to return!

  • Liked — The setting and the breakfasts
  • Disliked — Bed could be a bit more comfortable but that's it!
