“Everything we hoped for”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2010

We have just returned home from a very pleasant stay at Le Preskil Beach Resort, Mauritius.
We were greeted after a long flight via Dubai with a welcome drink and a refreshing hot towel. We were shown around the resort before being offered a chance to shower, change as we arrived early and our room would not be ready.
We stayed on a half board basis which suited our needs as the upgrade was 55 Euros per day would not be VFM (value for money). There is a good supermarket called the London Way about a 15 min walk and there are plenty of friendly taxis waiting to take you back with your purchases at very good rates. Don't be put off by the taxi touts as they are generally friendly and are open to negotiation on the price. A one way trip to the supermarket will be about 50 rupees. The hotel staff are generally friendly, particularly the room maids who make the rooms look great. I would upgrade if you can to the cottages as the rooms are bigger and more private. The food is good and plentiful, but its worth making time for the two speciality restaurants which costs 15 euros extra, well worth it. Water sports are available and most are free to use.The catamaran day out is well worth the 40 Euros.
Out and about there are lots of things to do. we did a package trip of Walking with lions, lunch and a two hour quad bikes safari at Casaela Park near Flic and Flac, An excellent package and very memorable (£97 pp). Port Louis is a must with an excellent indoor market but be prepared to haggle and hide your valuables, just common sense advice !
A beautiful island with lovely people and a very good hotel.

From the moment we arrived, we were treated incredibly well. Staff are very friendly but professional and efficient. Nothing was too much trouble for them. We booked a deluxe penthouse suite on the beach - perfect. We also booked all inclusive which was worth the extra cost - so many extras included. Excellent for beginners snorkelling for the first time. Lovely beach. If there is anything at all you are unhappy with, politely let them know and if it is within their power, they will fix it. Will definitely go back.

Stayed 11 nights in Mar 2010 and enjoyed our time there. Location is good, only around 15 mins from the Airport and just a few mins by taxi from Mahebourg town (market day is Monday).

Stayed All Inclusive in a Prestige Cottage room and were happy with the standard of the room - although we did have 2 cockroaches in the room, otherwise room was clean and had what we needed. Mini bar soft drinks/beer were part of the all incl pkge, and also tea and coffee making facilities.
Room had a great view of the nearby island, and also Lionhead mountain and was just a few steps from the beach and restaurants.

Its really worth going All Incl (AI) we felt as cost of drinks, lunch etc would mount up if you were buying these at the hotel. Example: Burger or Club sandwich with fries were around was around Euros9 each. Wine we had on AI was around Euros 25/bottle if you purchased it. Beer Euros3.

Breakfast was adequate, but not as sumptious or extensive as some All Incs we have had in the Carribbean.

On All Incl we could choose buffet lunch in the main restaurant, or from the menu at the Indigo bar by the beach which served burgers, hot dogs, salad, club sandwich. We used both restaurants and felt the choice was good.

For dinner on All Incl we could eat in the buffet, or in the Charka Steak restaurant, or Tapas Beach Restaurant. We like waiter service for dinner, so alternated between these 2 and did not use the main buffet at all. Just needed to book the restaurant one day ahead with Guest services, but never had a problem getting a table. Steaks in the Charka were very good, and there were other choices such as Fish of the day in Charka. Tapas menu for AI pkge was a set menu with 2 or 3 choices for starter, main course or pudding, or you could pay a suppplement for Lobster, etc. Menu in Tapas did change most nights so we felt gave us a reasonable variety and choice.
On AI, you could order any drinks marked with an asterix on the menu and this included wine by the bottle with dinner.

On AI pkge you could get drinks brought direct to your sunbed on the Beach by the Beach Boy team.

There was entertainment every night, and the entertainment team ran Aqua gym, Bocci ball, etc during the day, also looked after kids if you wanted.

There is a Fitness room with reasonable range of equipment.

Beach is sandy, but also has areas of small sharp coral pieces, so in some areas could be a bit rough on bare feet. We liked the beach as you could get in the sea easily and go out quite a long way before getting out of your depth.

On the beach you could use the pedalos, wind surf, canoe, sailboats etc for free.
They only let you use the snorkel kit if you went out on the free glass bottom boat trip, you could not take it and use it off the beach, so bring your own if you want to snorkel off the beach. There isn't a vast amount of fish, but we found it worth doing.
The snorkel trip on the glass bottom boat is just a few minutes out into the bay area, but is worth doing - you don't have to snorkel and can just view from the boat if you prefer. Trip is free and operates twice each afternoon.
Waterskiing was also free.

Scuba lessons were running in the pool, and the divers went out on the boat most days.
Diving was fairly good, although several days we had to dive in the bay area close to the hotel as the high waves meant the boat could not get out over the reef.

We also took the Euro 10 per person snorkel trip to Blue Bay - around 20 mins in the glass bottom boat, and its a 2 hour trip which runs most mornings.

This was our 3rd time in Mauritius at different hotels - previously stayed at La Pirogue and The Heritage. We felt Le Preskil was quite good value for money. Staff were friendly and helpful and choice of food was reasonably good.

The mix of guests was probably slightly more French than other nationalities, with mix of English, Italian, German, but all the staff speak good English.

We did not bother to book a transfer from the Airport as we knew it was not far.
There are taxis at the airport when you arrive and the hotel will book you one for your return. Fare is around 500 rupees each way.
There are currency exchange desks and ATMs at the airport.

We arrived at this Hotel feeling shattered, warn out and in need of a good holiday. We were at the right place. On arrival we were greeted with a warm reception from the staff and a cool cocktail. The room was immediately ready to go to and our cases were taken beforehand and put in the rooms.

Location - stunning and truly represented paradise.

Staff - Very friendly, always greeted with a smile and couldn't do enough for you. We also left our camera one night in the bar and the staff made a point of coming to find us to give it back. We felt safe and looked after.

Beach - clean and beds always available, there are a couple of beach sellers but the Hotel have a fantastic system where you can put up either a green flag if you want something i.e drink, or a red flag if you do not want to be disturbed. Beach waiters attended to your every need and were on hand constantly to serve drinks etc.

Food - Buffet had themed evenings and plenty of variety and the a la carte resturant was exceptional. Even if you were half board you could eat there at a reduced rate of 15 euros each which included a three course meal.

Drinks - A good variety of drinks and cocktails. You must try the Cheeky Bam!

Rooms - We had a beach view which was beautiful. It had an excellent air conditioning system and even had a mosquito repellent plug in. Cleanliness was exceptional (as it was throughout the whole hotel).

Prices - When we read the reviews for prices in Mauritus, it would often mention how expensive the hotel prices were. However, we did not find this at the Preskil. Drinks were basically the average english price, i.e. one euro for a large bottle of water and alcoholic drinks of basic bar prices you would find in the UK. We went half board so if you were all inclusive this wouldn't be a problem anyway.

Excursions - the Hotel offer a taxi service which listed prices using their own drivers. We found this to be a cheaper option than going through our travel agents. Also, remember to tell the taxi driver exactly where you want to go and if you don't want to go to the factories, just tell them. The taxis were clean and safe and the drivers very polite and offered a great insight into the island. Also, the Hotel have their own catermang which takes you to a lovely island and offers a wonderful barbeque and drinks. This was a great day out and one that we would recommend.

Overall, we would be more than happy to recommend this Hotel. It is certainly not the most expensive or luxiourious hotel on the island but we think it has the most heart.

We have travelled to many places around the world and have stayed at many hotels. For us, this is the first time we have come back and felt that we wanted to tell everyone how wonderful it was. The staff ultimately, make the holiday that bit more special.

everything is good enough from reception to breakfast to dinner to activities to many others. Only thing is the location is far away from the action so there's nothing much within 5km of the resort.

We stayed here as a final destination after an amazing and immensely enjoyable safari tour in Zambia, and our expectations for Mauritius were perhaps set too high. We were a little disappointed with The Preskil after our stay in Zambia. Nevertheless I would rate this hotel as average to good overall. Apart from a rather brusque and rushed introduction to the hotel by the receptionist upon checking in, we found the staff and service to be very good. The standard rooms are a little cramped and dated, and the rooms we were offered had a very distinct damp and musty smell. We stayed on HB basis. The quaility of food available at the buffet dinner was good, with a good variety that changed each night. However our most enjoyable meals were taken at the beach front restaurant, which has to be booked well in advance and a supplement is charged. The view across the bay towards the mountains is spectacular and the hotel is located in a nice quiet area, with a number of shops in the village within easy walking distance. The evening entertainment was good. We booked an excursion hoping to see other parts of the island, but this turned out to be nothing more than a tour of various shops! By late morning we had enough and told the guide to cut out any further stops at shops. This meant that we were returned to the hotel early after lunch. Apart from our bad experience on the excursion and the fact that the weather was cool and mainly cloudy (the latter obviously not being the fault of the hotel), we had a reasonably good stay. Mauritius is a 12 hour flight from the UK and in my opinion there are many resorts/hotels that are as good as or better, and that are much closer to home.

We stayed at the Preskil in late November 09 and were looking for a week of relaxation in the sun which we got. The half board package was a last minute deal via Hayes and Jarvis and we felt represented good value for money even when paying for items not included as we still saved money on the A/inc price. Everything is charged in Euro’s so it works out a bit expensive for us Brits at present – but no worse than London prices.

The hotel staff are very welcoming right from arrival when they gave us a cool drink and warm refreshing towel even before booking us in to the time we left. Individual tipping is not allowed so the service was very genuine.

The rooms are in two storey blocks many of which have sea views, or larger detached villas on the beach itself, though these comprise 2 apartments. Ours was first floor, with a balcony which we felt was better as nobody walked pass your room. It was spacious and clean even if the decor was showing its age. The shower was a bit cold but after we mentioned it to reception by that evening it was working fine and we cannot fault them.

In the evening there is a long trousers policy so men no shorts! There are 3 restaurants. The main offers typical international cuisine which we felt lacked variety after a few days, the other two have to be booked (we never had a problem getting in but was low season). The Charka Steak House is very tastefully decorated and aimed at a slightly higher level of service, though we felt it missed out achieving that. The Tapas Grill and Beach bar (our favourite) was more laid back, but be warned if watching your weight the portions are generous and staff also keep bringing up fresh pizza bread and nibbles so we always left there absolutely stuffed – the fish on a skewer is a must. The Indigo bar also does bar snacks but in the evening they put on entertainment so we manily used that to relax in afterwards.

Leisure facilities were good and many are free. We can recommend the hotels catamaran cruise, which is a very relaxed atmosphere with plenty to eat and drink and an opportunity to snorkel on the way. We also did an island tour but felt it spent too much time going to tourist shops. As a diver I found the coral and sea life poor so only did the one dive. The hotel offers excellent shower and changing facilities so you do not need to keep your room at the end of your stay. One final thing don’t be worried that the hotel is located close to the airport - only once did we hear a plane go over us and there is no long bus journey at each end of your holiday.

Would we recommend Preskil yes we would, would we go back – yes but the world is a big place :)
