“Mauritius/Preskil - a bad experience”
Reviewed May 23, 2012

Spent 4 days at this resort en route Johannesburg back to Perth, and needless to say, we will not be going back. This was our 1st trip to the island, and also our last. Upon arrival at the Airport, we exchanged traveller's cheques into Rupee. It all looked fine at the count, and when I sorted out finances the next morning at Preskil, they (Hibashi Finance - who advertise a 0% commission) had stolen Ms500 in the transaction. At Preskil itself, we found the wait staff rude, and by this I refer to their reactions when asked for a spoon to be placed on our table for soups etc. After a socialising interaction between staff which lasted all of 5 minutes, the spoon eventually arrived. This happened on numerous occasions. The room #134 was not clean, there was mould in the shower-well, and the entire room smelled like mould. We really tried to look for the positives,as no doubt, this a very pretty resort, but it all came to a head on the morning of our departure, when the concierge loaded our 4 cases on top of at least 6 others on the same trolley. At the first bend in the path, this all came tumbling down. We were afraid that there would be breakages for sure. After the manager was called, he insisted on us unpacking all our bags, right there in the arrivals foyer. By this time our transport had arrived. We stated that there was no time to unpack, as per Air Mauritius airlines, we had to be at the airport 3 hours prior to the flight. Not even an apology. Not any recognition. This confirmed it for us. We will never go back. VeeBee (Perth.)

Room Tip: Avoid Room 134. It smelled very strongly of mould, and the airconditioning made no difference at all...

We stayed at Preskil Beach resort the first two weeks in May and have just returned. This really is an amazing hotel. We traveled with our 6 year old daughter and the staff were great with her, always making a fuss of her.
We stayed in a Prestige Cottage on the beach and it was worth the extra. Amazing views and ideal with a child as you just open your patio and walk out onto the beach.
The restaurants were good, buffet had alot of choice for adults but not so much for children if they eat plain things. They usually have pizza so if there wasn't anything else our daughter would have that, although one night they didn't have any and the food was all spicy food so I asked at reception if there was any where we could get a childs meal or pizza and the restaurant manager went off and came back with steak and chips cooked especially for her! Cannot fault the customer service there, all the staff were brilliant. We only ate at the Tapas once but the food was nice. As for Charka steak house, we got in there as many nights as possible as the food was beautiful. You are always well looked after in there too and drinks topped up before you get to the end! On our last night it was my husbands Birthday and as soon as we arrived we were seated and given a bottle of champagne. They also gave him a Birthday cake which was a nice touch.
While we were there we renewed our wedding vows as we originally got married in Mauritius and thought it would be a nice thing to do. Linda the wedding co-ordinator was very good and made sure that she was clear about everything we wanted. I had email contact with her before we went and she always replied and was very helpful. We had a bamboo square thing set up on the beach for our vows as the gazebo has a plastic backing to protect from the wind and I thought the pictures would be nicer on the beach. Everything went perfectly and it was a lovely day. We chose not to use the hotel photographer as I researched a bit before we went and I chose Jean Daniel Villiers. I had seen his work and I liked his photos. He actually spends at least 3 days after weddings working on the photos which was good for us as on the vow renewal day it was very cloudy but he has brightened the pictures up so it looks like a nice day. The photos are amazing, he makes you do some funny poses that feel weird at the time but look great. I can't recommend him enough.
This is the third hotel we have stayed in at Mauritius. We have stayed in Le Victoria which is where we got married and also stayed in the Shandrani. Both these hotels have a higher star rating than Preskil but I can honestly say Preskil Beach is the one we will be staying at next time we come. In my opinion Preskil is better than the other two hotels.
All in all this genuinely is the best holiday we have ever had and we can't wait to return.

Trip Overview
We stayed at le Preskil between 16 and 23 December 2011 and wow, what a fantastic holiday.
This is a beautiful unique resort that is very popular with South Africans.

Location
The hotel is only about 12 minutes away from the airport, which is a huge bonus after a long flight.Although the airport is close we never saw any airplanes flying overhead nor we we disturbed by any jet noise. The hotel is also based in close proximity to the blue bay nature reserve, which has amazing crystal clear blue water and some of the largest tropical fish I have ever seen. You can walk there in about 30 minutes, or hire bicycles from the hotel and cycle there in about 15 minutes. The hotel also offers a snorkelling excursion to blue bay, which you pay about R150 pp for but it is totally worth it.

Rooms
We stayed in the prestige cottage which was situated right on the beach. We paid slightly more for this room but was definitely worth it, as some of the other rooms were behind each other and did not have a sea view (some of them faced the back of other rooms) The deluxe apartments were based on top of the prestige cottages and also had amazing views of the beach. Bathrooms were clean, and the cottage has a bath with an inset shower. The bathrooms in the standard rooms only had showers. We literally walked out of our room right onto the beach, and had a fantastic view.

Room tip: stay in a deluxe apartment or a prestige cottage, the view and location is worth the extra. Also ask for a room that is sea facing and on the beach, the other rooms that faced the land and were directly on the sea did not have direct beach access and the water smelt funny when the tide was out.

Restaurants
The main buffet restaurant of the hotel was great, with a good variety of food for breakfast and supper. You could choose your own meat and veggies that would be cooked in front of you to your liking. There was also lots of fresh fish which we loved and a good variety for children, pizza etc. The hotel would also make you something special if you were fussy or had allergies.
It was really nice to have breakfast at the pool everyday on the deck and look at the view.

The other 2 restaurants are a la carte and cost extra if you are staying HB, and free for most dishes with FB, although you pay extra for lobster etc… During lunch you can order as per the menu, however at supper time you had to have a 3 course meal, which you pay a flat rate for with HB. We were not told this when eating at the steak restaurant one night and only had mains, but were charged for a 3 course which was a bit frustrating. The hotel gave us a discount and apologised for not telling us, but we would have liked to have known before. Food at these restaurants was also fantastic.

Tip: if you are on HB, you can have a take away pizza for lunch which is much cheaper than a sandwich from the bar.
Also if you choose to go HB, go to the local shop down the road, you can just get a taxi from the hotel, and purchase all of your waters and soft drinks there. We did this and then just told the maid to remove all of the hotel bar items from our fridge. We also bought some biscuits and snacks for lunch time. We also bought in our own alcohol from duty free and some nice local rum at the shop and then had sun downers on our patio every night before dinner. This was very romantic and greatly reduced the extras bill at the end.

Activities
Although I am an avid scuba diver, I did not dive on this holiday as the scuba diving was just too expensive. The snorkelling however was included in the hotel activities and the clarity of the water and abundance of fish was excellent. You can also snorkel right off the hotel beach or go to the nature reserve on the glass bottom boat. The hotel also has its own catamaran which is fantastic for a day trip or sun downer trip. We used the travel agent catamaran trip as it was much cheaper than the hotel one and exactly the same. It left from just up the road and they came to fetch us from the hotel. It was about R800 pp vs R1300 for the hotel trip. It includes a full day on the catamaran and trip to a beautiful island and waterfall. It also includes a free bar, with fantastic rum cocktails and lunch braaied on the boat. Definitely a highlight of the trip.

The hotel also has free skiing, boating, canoes, peddle boats, tennis, volleyball and tournaments and much more. There is so much to do there that you don’t really need to leave.

Le Preskil offers fantastic value for money and is a great place for families or couples.

Room Tip: Room tip: stay in a deluxe apartment or a prestige cottage, the view and location is worth the extra...

I stayed the last week in April - weather good though mixed and quite cloudy, with a few storms. Oh well you can just go in the spa if it rains!
We stayed in a lagoon room which was lovely, with a nice balcony which had sea views. The room was actually much nicer than I thought it would be, and was kept really lovely by the housekeeping, who also left us nice towell animals! Make sure you leave a tip for them as they do look after you well. The shower was a little dated but the power v good indeed.

The location itself is just gorgeous, beautiful clear water and great views with tonnes of sunbeds -the green and red flag service is great and the beach staff really on the ball.
We didnt try the watersports as we were super lazy but they operate lots of catamaran trips plus free glass bottom boat snorkel trips. - lots of it is all complimentary which I think is brilliant. You cant snorkel off the beach unless you bring your own snorkels as the staff wont provide them in case you swim past the line of buoys - quite rightly as there are a fair few boats around and we did see some people swim out who could have come a cropper!
All restaurants were lovely - great buffet breakfast and lunch, really varied- dinner most nights we ate in the a la carte restaurants which were great, so worth doing. The steaks at Charka were as good as mentioned on here and it had a great atmosphere. Tapas on the beach - we ate there twice and it had the same menu so I'd check before booking what it is on the menu -so nice to eat on the beach though
The Indigo bar was great and we certainly tried all the drinks on offer here - the lovely staff even suggested things for us to try! Is definately worth the all inclusive here - its not massively pricy but it can all add up and we didnt want to watch what we were spending!
The staff have to be mentioned -there always seemed to be lots of staff around and we met so many lovely ones, mainly in the bar and restaurants! The managers are very visible too and always saying hi and asking how you are. Rememeber to tip the staff as pay isnt too high in Mauritius and they all seem to work really hard.
We travelled with Kuoni, all transfer arrangements were great and the rep on resort really helpful in arranging our tours - a brilliant holiday
So I'd definately recommend Preskil - in fact I'd love to be back there right now!

Room Tip: Try and upgrade to one of the cottages on the beach

We stayed a week in mid March on half-board. Entrance to the hotel which is on a peninsula with cluster of palm trees and a beautiful garden. If you are the type to drink and eat a lot then I would suggest you choose full board as extras are rather expensive, including the mini-bar they have in the room. Service and cleaniness excellent. Buffet very bland, not much variety and hardly any fish. However, breakfasts are excellent with fresh made pastries and bread. We stayed in a Lagoon Room 128, very nice but one should choose a little away from the noise for the nights you want to retire early or just have an early night. Beach excelent, one dos'nt have to bring beach towels as they provide clean ones every day. Lovely to sit and have your snacks or pastries brought from breakfast. Tip if you are on half board, there is a London Supermarket just about 15 minutes walk or otherwise take a taxi to stock up. However, one is not allowed to bring any drinks into the restaurant area, and drinks bought even during meals are rather expensive. Hotel has daily entertainment programme with something enjoyable for everyone. Smimming pools are lovely and clean. The weather was excellent. Room was well decorated with flat TV screens, good bathroom and leading to the beach. They have another three restaurants where one can enjoy at an extra small charge but well worth it. My recommendations, I would go there again and its well worth the price and well rated for a 4 star resort. Lovely for weddings and honey-moon. Although they also have entertainment for children and a nursery where you can leave your little ones to enjoy some peace and quite. Lovely resort.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the entertainment area, unless you go to sleep after the show are over

we have just returned from Le preskil beach hotel where we spent a fantastic week. I had mixed feelings reading other reports and I could not fault the hotel on anything. The rooms were very clean and no insects as quoted by other people. The service from Christopher and Nisha exceeded our expectations. Upon arrival we were greeted by both. We have visited Mauritius on many occasions and stayed in 5* hotels and were pleasantly suprised by the hotel. Drinks at any hotel in Mauritius are expensive and the food was of the same quality you would receive at a 5* hotel. The beach is nice and big and plenty of space. The service on the beach is outstanding and especially thanks to Jean Denis. The beach is not soft white sand but is the same every where. A trip to paradis island on the catamarn is well worth it. A dinner on the beach was organised for us which was highlight of the trip. the treatment in the spa was also very good. The beach hawkers were minimal. We will definetly go back again. Thanks to all the staff at the hotel

Arrived at the hotel late morning after a very very long journey. Our room wasn't ready but we were encouraged to go out and enjoy the sunshine and check out the hotel. The staff were very helpful and we had a wander around this beautiful hotel and beach. After lunch we went to our room. It was a honeymoon lagoon room and with a stunning view it was bright and beautifully made up. A great start to our honeymoon. We ate in the buffet restaurant 4 of our 10 nights and 7 of our afternoons- always delicious, fresh and varied. There was always a pizza and pasta of the day for any fussy eaters out there. The other 6 nights we split between the two outstanding a la carte restaurants, the Charka steak is to die for! Best steak we have ever eaten. The tapas beach restaurant is the most romantic setting for a restaurant possible. Service throughout the hotel is brilliant. Always plenty of staff who attend to your every need. Entertainment was quite good also and the local band who play 3 nights a week are super. We did two of the hotels trips- the free glass bottomed boat and snorkelling- brilliant! Much better than expected. And the day cruise to lie au serf which is certainly up there as a highlight of our holiday- beautiful boat, lively staff and rum and fun all day. I would recommend booking any trips with the hotel as it is much cheaper than with Kingsley who sells trips on the beach. We did one trip with him that was quite good but completely over priced and not at all what he told us it would be. The guest relations at the hotel are open until midnight which was great, meaning we could organise or discuss next day activities late at night- great for unorganised people like us.

A few words of warning- go all inclusive as the hotel is very expensive for food and drink and it was wonderful not to worry about that- as we cracked open a bottle of sparkling wine at lunchtime!

If you want to go anywhere in a taxi be prepared to be ripped off- taxi's for tourists are absolutely extortionate!!!

Cant wait to return for our 10 year anniversary!!
