Shamrock Motel & Cottages
Ranked #3 of 5 Hotels in Long Lake
Reviewed June 14, 2011

Just got back from staying here for 5 days. These owners, without question are probably the most accomodating of any place I stayed bar none. we went there by motorcycle and about half hour after we arrived the winds and rain were about to nail us.They came up to us and told us to park all of our bikes in their garage. The downpour continued and they offered to drive us to the restaurant in town, or at least pick us up some food. The whole stay they always were asking usif there was anything we needed etc. Do yourself a favour and look no further and book this place. It's not a five star hotel, but just middle of the road comfortable. Signed, The crew from Ontario Canada.

I don't know if the other reviewers met someone different than I did upon check in, but they couldn't have been nicer. The person at check in was super friendly and helpful, chatted with me and my boyfriend and kindly answered any questions we had. Even offered to make a call for us to set up a sea plane ride since there is no cell phone service in most of Long Lake.

We got one of the cottages # 6 and while the furnishings were a bit dated, it was clean and cute and had a great view of the lake & sunset. And the best part was the gas fireplace in the living room. It was also very large and well stocked with pots & pans all the needed kitchen items !!! Coffee makings were provided and the kitchen had a stove and fridge. A great deal at an great price !!!!

I did read in the info binder that was left on the table the rules regarding no guests on the property and to be honest it didn't bother me at all. I stayed there to have a quiet, relaxing vacation without a bunch of loud visitors and non guests coming in an out of the property. The grounds were well kept and tailored to familys and small groups wanting to relax in peace.

An added plus ......I left my camera battery and charger plugged into an outlet when we left and when I realized it and called to see if it had been found they went and checked, and found it and quickly mailed it back to me !!

Had a great time and would recommend to anyone who wants to enjoy a low key time with out a lot of noise and distractions. It is a small lakeside hotel in a small town, so don't go expecting a four star hotel and you won't be disappointed !!!!

My husband & I took a mini vacation to the Adirondacks after dropping our sons off to college. We had happy memories of the area having spent many summer family vacations in nearby Blue Mountain Lake when our boys were little. We were eager to spend a few days in the area relaxing, hiking, visiting Adirondack museums and shops.

Shamrock Motel & Cottages in Long Lake was exactly what we were looking for: a charming, friendly place to spend a few days while enjoying the lakes and mountains.
The motel has been family-owned for several generations and their hospitality was genuine. The gentleman who greeted us, personally showed us to our room, a nice gesture. The accommodations were roomy enough, comfortable, and included a refrigerator, television and free wireless internet (there is no cell phone service in Long Lake, but we made do with email and instant messaging on our computer). The small bathroom had been updated with modern fixtures including a pedestal sink and tiled shower stall. I had forgotten to pack a hair dryer and the staff provided one. A three-ring binder in the room was nicely organized and provided local information, menus of nearby places to eat (not many in Long Lake), a history of the lodging and their policies.

We had a wonderful view of the lake and mountains from our picture window. The grounds were lovely: spacious, grassy yard with lawn games (shuffleboard, badminton, etc.), grill, fire pit, picnic table and Adirondack chairs. A set of stairs led to the private beach where we could relax in chaise lounge chairs or sit in Adirondack chairs on the dock (some guests were fishing) to watch the spectacular sunset. Kayaks and canoes were available to rent.

All in all, we were delighted with Shamrock Motel & Cottages and would gladly return.

I am giving this place 5 stars for the following reason. Everything was just fine. We were greeted by the owner who was very personable and helpful with local knowledge, things to do and what is going on at the property.
Our room was one of the efficiencies. Size wise it was about the size of a standard hotel room. The unit was very clean and cozy. We basically only stayed there to sleep so we did not spend much time in it. So for the price you couldn't beat it.
The grounds are very nice and peaceful and the beach is a relaxing spot.
Close by are a couple of really good places to eat.
I would come back!

Met my son coming down from upper Ny for a weekend of ice fishing. We expect a clean, warm, reasonably spacious and friendly place....the Shamrock more than met those. After coming off the ice, it is a very welcome thing to be warm and to be able to get a comfortable night sleep. Would recommend this to anyone who is fishing or snowmobiling that wants value for their dollar.

First the pros: The location is nice, close to town and easy to find. The room was very clean, and recently renovated so the bath is modern (tiny but modern, which is OK). The room (we didn't stay in the cottages) was small but it was adequate and comfortable with cable tv, a little fridge and a coffee maker. The grounds are very well kept and the beach (down a flight of stairs, with car access if you can't do stairs) is beautiful. Five stars for the beach. It's really nice.

Now the cons, from pretty trivial to serious. There is no cell phone service in Long Lake, so you might expect a phone in your room. You'd be wrong. There is a pay phone booth out by the road. OK, a little inconvenient, but no big deal.

They advertise wifi. No. They have a wireless router in the owners' house, from which a weak and wavering signal sometimes penetrates the rooms. We could sometimes pick it up, but it would drop after a few minutes, and often was not even visible to the computer. If you really want wireless access, find another place. If you can live without it, then again no big deal.

Third, and this is the big one in a resort area, they have a policy on people coming to see you when you are checked in. OK, no one wants 45 of your best friends showing up with beer and fireworks, totally understandable. But on the dresser is a notice that reads: "The Shamrock is a private, family-owned resort. All _registered_ guests are invited to utilize the facilities and grounds. However, only those individuals registered with your party are welcome here. In the event that you anticipate visitors, please 1) Call them and tell them that they can't come. 2) Go see them at THEIR place. 3) Check with the office. With advanced approval, some exceptions may be made. Any exceptions mutually agreed-upon will incur a $30 day. fee payable in advance." We were traveling to participate in a kayak race. We checked in, unaware of the policy, and then went to dinner. Two racing friends, knowing that we were planning to stay there, stopped by to see if we'd arrived. These were two ordinary, sober middle-aged men, and they would only say that the owners were "exceptionally nasty" to them. Geez Louise, if I can't even meet up with friends in the parking lot, there are lots of other places to stay in Long Lake! We won't be back.

Addressing the reviewer's cons:
First - There are now courtesy phones located at 3 locations on the grounds for guests. Cell coverage should be a reality within a year.
Second - WIFI strength has been improved.
Third - Visitors mentioned by the reviewer arrived after 10:00PM. Office hours are from 8:00AM to 10:00PM every day and we ask our guests to have quiet hours after 10:00PM. Escorting visitors at that time would have been disruptive to other registered guests.

We stayed here for a week last year in a cottage. Although the cottage itself could do with some renovation (an ongoing programme I believe) it was a lovely break, very peaceful and beautiful. The owners were very helpful with local advice and the site was very well maintained.
