We happened to stumble across this place by accident and it was a hidden gem! The food was one of the best tasting BBQ's we had in the US - even after travelling through some of the southern states. In comparison to some of the other places we had visited I would say the portions are based more on quality than quantity, so it may seem a little pricey but in my opinion - definitely worth it!

If you like meat, if you like BBQ and if you want a place to eat and chat, all of these are tops at John Brown. Order and sit, your name gets called, they supply paper plates and plastic forks. The meat is tender and full of flavor and the sides are very tasty. I tried brisket, but members of the group enjoyed pulled pork, ribs and chicken. Seemed that there were no bad choices. chose soft drinks but big choice of beers available. I liked the inside of the place, music playing, not too noisy. Not overdecorated. Was a great place for lunch.

We first visited John Brown’s Smokehouse in its original smaller location in Astoria. At the time, John Brown’s was probably the only barbecue restaurant in the immediate are and, of course, being from New York, we were a bit skeptical. This is one of those situations where we were actually glad we were wrong about our preconceived notions. John Brown’s barbecue is one of the best barbecues we’ve ever had. The taste, texture, and flavor of all the meats were all better than what we expected. Coincidentally, upon our second visit, immediately after our first visit (that is how much we liked it!), we actually met the owner and that is when we discovered that he, much like most in the area, is not a native New Yorker and his vision is to serve authentic Kansas City-style barbecue. Prior to our visits, we did not even know what a “burnt end” is? Now, it is a staple in our order.

John Brown’s Smokehouse have now relocated to Long Island City, which isn’t too far from the original place. Their menu comprises of everything barbecue from pulled pork to spare ribs. And most, if not all, of their meats are offered by the pound as well. The new location even has a bar in the back.

John Brown’s was a satisfying dining experience from when we first visited them and that is why we keep coming back. I remember we thought that their portions were quite undersized for the price that they charged but we quickly got over that afterwards. We’ve always dined in or have ordered to take out so we could not really relate to those who’ve had issues with regards to their delivery service.

Overall, whenever we have the craving for some real good barbecue, we always head to John Brown’s.

John Brown is a down to earth BBQ experience with the owner in the kitchen. Plastic table sheets, small cosy court yard, friendly staff and great selection of local brewskis on tap. The burntends are to drive a hundred miles for! Ribs are great, pastrami and pulled pork and his own hot BBQ sauce. Highly recommended.

I come here quite a lot. The BBQ is great and they have a nice outdoor seating section. It can be quite crowded there but I have never not gotten a seat. Parking in the neighborhood can be difficult though. Be careful too of the Iced Tea - SWEET! It's with honey, but it will over dose your sugar load.
