When I was there in October of 2011 some of the art work on the walls was exceptionally good and nice to see but there was a lot of repetitive demonic looking art that gets a bit old to look at over and over. And too, I had expected to see more than what was there. I thought that there were more buildings but it was just one big one. But, the art on the walls is always changing so what is here today will be painted over some time in the future with more art.

I first noticed this large warehouse complex from the 7 train over a year ago. This time at stayed at the nearby Ravel Hotel and took a short walk to 5 Pointz (so named after the 5 New York Boroughs is situated opposite from MoMa/P.S. 1 museum/gallery. If you are looking for Michaelangelo's Pieta don't go there (but I think the Italian Master would actually enjoy a visit). This Graffiti Mecca is also known as the Institute of Higher Burnin'. The whole buiding is covered by a collage of aerosol and graffiti art; inside this converted warehouse apparently are numerous artist studios (opening times seem a little hazy and informal). The quality of the graffiti varies but it's certainly miles ahead of the mindless stuff you often find on inner city walls - some of it reminded me of the graffiti on New York subway trains in the 1970s and 80s. (see also www.5ptz.com) .
