This was our first stay on our trip to New York and we arrived at about 1am with the taxi driver telling us how dangerous the area was which didn't make us feel to safe. It is a nice hotel with bigger rooms than i expected, good cable channels, friendly staff, and excellent breakfast options down at the restaurant. The area to the right of the hotel is pretty dodgy, my friend was staying at a friends house 6 minute walk away from the hotel on the right side and her door man told her it would be much to dangerous to walk over to our house at 10pm. During the day we felt very safe, luckily because this is the direction of the nearest subway but we did walk around at night and it did seem to be very unsafe.
The left side is very safe day or night however and there are some nice deli's and places to eat as well as a convenient dairy down the road.
Overall a nice place who were very patient with us as we lost our bags on the airline which had all our stuff including wallets so they were patient enough to let us pay them the next day when our bag arrived.
Would recommend for all ages but would beware of going out at night for a stroll etc

New, very clean, flat-screen TV, free continental breakfast (with excellent donuts), good free wireless Internet, comfy beds, two subway stops (F train) to Manhattan, with subway half a block away, good prices (far, far, far better than in Manhattan). Any down sides?

As others have stated, this is a gritty neighborhood. Storage facility across the street; large housing project half a block away, Also the only three nearby restaurants are gross, and there is very limited off-street parking (and except on weekends, street cleaning makes on-street parking a substantial chore). However, the friendly staff will be glad to provide menus of restaurants that deliver, and while the neighborhood may be gritty, I don't consider it at all dangerous (you are on a major, busy thoroughfare -- but the rooms are quiet). In other words, if you aren't driving, you're experienced in big cities, and you'd like to save a few bucks, this is a great and highly recommended option.

Neighborhood isn't good but you just need to walk a block till the subway entrance. Two stations away from downtown. If not, $12 cab drive from Times Square.
Breakfast is good. Wi-fi only in the lobby. Rooms are decent, we had a good view to Manhattan.
I would recommend it based on its price and location.

picked this hotel because only 1/2 block from subway station. Hotel was clean, Hugo at front desk was super nice and helpful with directions and tips. Room clean, large, comfortable. We never could get the wall unit or thermostat to work but room was comfortable so we figured the whole hall was on same heating unit/ thermostat. Breakfast on Sunday morning was crowded and crazy, but thats to be expected. For the price of less than $100 a night it was a value, don't let the photos of the surrounding neighborhood scare you. Yeah, its rough looking/industrial are but we never felt threatened and walked from substation to hotel really late at night coming back from Times Square. Just know that its the F line, not the R!!!! or you will end up having to stay on the train for an hour!

Room Tip: we were in 812, close to elevator but didnt hear noises

I stayed at this hotel while visiting NYC with my family (husband and 2 teens). This hotel corresponded exactly to what I was looking for. A not expansive, good and clean hotel from which I could easily commute to Manhattan every morning and evening. The hotel is only 2 minutes walk to the subway F line. I agree the area in which the hotel is located is not exciting (industrial area, low-end appartment) but I do not care as when I am in NYC the only thing I need is a comfy bed for 8 hours a day. I was a bit nervous about the parking availabilty as the hotel has very limited parking spots on site. I was lucky, there was one spot available when I arrived, parked the car which stayed there for 4 days. There are also many parking spots on the streets surrounding the hotel. The internet access is free but almost inexistant....I was in room 901 and the connection was impossible from this room but the Manhattan view was stunning!
