“Don't focus on the surroundings, no atmosphere, its about the food....”

It isn't pretty but the food is very good - very popular with locals, business people and cab drivers, this unassuming diner is holding what is no doubt a prime real estate spot in Long Island City, an area now being developed with condos and restaurants.

Indian food with complex flavours, well priced. Everything I have had here is terrific and often superior to more expensive places - issue is the setting which is really not the nicest. So for a quick meal its great - when I am in NYC I try to go on weekends for brunch (there isn't a specific menu but its quieter and the parathas are terrific).

“So-so place”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 28, 2012

We stayed at the Comfort Inn, a few blocks away from this restaurant. Wanted to have Indian food and this was the closest. Five Star Diner is adjacent to the Five Star Banquet. We went to the Diner on a Sunday at about 2 pm. There is no buffet on Sundays. So, we ordered from the menu - Malai Kofta, Butter Chicken and naan. Naan was good. The dishes were alright, - 3/5. They had a lot of cream in it. Now, getting into the details - Malai Kofta only had 3 small veg balls (kofta) for 9.99, which is kinda expensive. Butter chicken (10.99) also had tons of cream and had few chicken pieces which were small in size and looked like pieces plucked from the chicken leg. The chicken pieces had some red color in them and looked like they were marinated with tandoor masala. I am not sure if they used the meat intended for tandoor chicken to make butter chicken. Since we were really hungry, we ate them anyway.
Now, regarding the look and feel of the restaurant - This place needs some renovation, does look very old and is not very clean. The restrooms are located downstairs. I am one of those people who rate a restaurant based on food quality and restroom cleanliness. I will rate the restrooms at 1/5, very untidy, stinky, old, Not good at all.
Since food was so-so and has an untidy restroom, i give an overall rating of Poor.
