There are 5 buildings to explore. We spent 2 1/2 hours with our volunteer docent, Joan. She explained so much about the area, its history, and the items on display. Most things had simple name tags...her explanations brought them to life. It would most certainly be a less interesting to wonder through the displays without hearing the stories behind them.

We stumbled on this little museum (the Erie Canal Discovery Center) which is only part of the Niagara County History Center. The Discovery Center is located on Church street across from the Presbyterian Church. The docents know a lot about the history of Lockport and the canal. It's worth the $5 to support the museum. It's nice to have a place to go in western NY to see the canal and the locks. You can walk from the museum over to the canal and view the locks. It's great if you can see a boat going through. Don't forget that the operating lock is the modern one. The old locks were a series of 5 separate locks and you can still see where they were.

I used to go here when I was a teen (Lockport did not offer a lot for kids to do). I still go there when I am in town. Its not just one building, it is three or four, and every exhibit is interesting and informative. Staff is friendly. Its only five dollars for admission and they have a great gift store, too. If you need information about other tourist sites in Lockport, they have a lot of that available.
