Oddly enough this is a very well done, interesting little spot that I went to by accident one day while visiting onondaga lake park. Very informative on the lake and the salt industry

“Salt Museum - an education in salt”
Reviewed September 20, 2012

Educational look at the history of salt in the region and how valuable it was. The museum is a reconstruction of a typical salt house with displays of tools and equipment used during those days. A film can be seen and the museum is a self-guided experience. Nice way to pass an hour.

“Underfunded and unpleasant”
Reviewed September 5, 2012

I visited the Salt Museum on a suggestion from Roadside America. Part of the Onondaga Lake park area, the museum is housed in the former salt "mine" of Syracuse, where brined water was prepared and dried to produce salt. I was excited about this museum but found it severely lacking. There is no air conditioning which makes the place unpleasant and damp in the summer. Exhibits were broken and old--yes, they should be "old" as in historical, but not unkempt and dusty. Information placards were rarely helpful and also in disrepair. The museum's website boasts tour guides in period dress but there were none to be found; the only staff member was a gift shop cashier who obviously didn't want to be there. I spent less than 20 minutes in this museum and would not go back. Instead, I'd suggest driving into downtown Syracuse to the better-funded and better-curated Erie Canal Museum, which I enjoyed greatly.
