Great choice of soup, nice selection of draft beer. Comfortable and convivial. Tasty American cuisine. I had a white hot and some cheeseburger chowder and got to watch the baseball game I wanted to see.

I had mexican-rice soup and a chicken-wing wrap (which was instead served on a roll b/c they had just run out of wraps). The soup... thick and hearty with rice, incredibly tender cuts of beef (a big plus, typically it's ground beef elsewhere), tomatoes, maybe some other stuff. It was not real spicy but loaded with flavor and with a noticable hint of cilantro (another big plus, most mexican restaurants fail to use cilantro) which made the soup very bright and perfectly suited for summer. After I scarfed down that soup, I wanted another gallon.

The chicken-wing sandwhich... almost everyone makes these identically but this one was much different. There was no lettuce, no shredded cheese, no fried chicken nuggets bathed in Frank's red hot sauce. Instead there was chicken, loads of it, in grilled chunks, bathed in a light hot sauce mixed in with some bleu cheese dressing and some other spices. A couple chunks were a little overcooked but most were perfectly tender.

Because the food was so unique and made with a lot of thought and care, I'll definitely be back, especially to try more of their soups.

Great place tucked in the Lima NY. You won't find a larger menu of soups, we counted 60! Great speedies and my BLT wrap was delicious. Very interesting history and The American still operates as a hotel. Staff was very friendly and service was great.

I don't understand why there aren't lines out the door.

In our family "Do you want soup?" means: "Do you want to go to the American Hotel?" The menu changes every day. Today's soups were Aruba Pea (Pea with sausage), Ribolita (beef with italian bread), Cheeseburg Chowder (everything but the bun), White bean, kale, and sausage, vegetable beef (you need to try theirs), and Chicken noodle with meatballs (Rose was bored?).

The soups are always excellent. Their spiedies are the best. Beers on tap vary. Saranac root beers on tap for the non-imbibing crowd. Cheeseburgers seem like homemade; large and juicy.

Decor? Well, I'll bet it was fancy 150 years ago. The years in between have given it "character." We always feel at home. It's the kind of place where the people at the next table will offer advice on what's best today.

a bit of history but most of all the home made soups offered are outstanding. Friendly people and a favorite in our area.
