Looking to get away from the falls for a day we decided to check out this place because it was free. The museum and observation deck is actually over the road from the power station (accessed via a glass skyway) so the views are better than you'd get at the top of the dam. You can't see the falls but you can see the rapids in the gorge. The museum portion had lots of interactive exhibits for the kids which did a good job explaining how generators and turbines work and a huge model map showing the area and where the water is diverted from above the falls to run to the two power plants and reservoir. The reservoir was created on Indian land seized through eminent domain so there were a few exhibits about the history of the local Indian tribes as well. And there was a movie detailing the reason for and history of the plant's creation. They did it all in three years which seems crazy since nowadays we can't even get a road resurfaced in under a year.
