“Fabulous pet friendly get away!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 10, 2013

I recently spent 3 nights at the Horned Dorset Inn Bed and Breakfast. My husband and I were looking for a pet friendly get away with a touch of elegance, which is what we found. The inn is welcoming and grand, obviously lovingly restored with many original architectural details as well as a lovely collection of antique appointments. The entire staff made us feel pamperd. The breakfast included locally made yogurt, house made pastries and even home made jam! Our dog Huxley loved the homemade dog biscuits that were brought to him every day and found the premisis pefectly suited to a well behaved travelling pooch. The gardens were a perfect place to relax with a glass of wine after a day of antiquing and exploring the countryside.. a walk up to their working apple orchard shouldn't be missed.. what a view! We had dinner at the restaurant 2 of the 3 nights and left wishing we lived closer so we could return more often. They were more than happy to accomodate a vegetarian request and we were thrilled to find out how commited to sustainable agriculture they are by using locally raised meats and veggies. Our dinners were nothing short of divine! The service was impecable and the atmosphere and history of the building captivating. Being artists ourselves, we were very excited to hear about their artist in residency programs highlighting all that this very special place has to offer and insipre.. we hope to return again soon!

“An escape worth having”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 10, 2013

Its rare in Upstate NY to find a restaurant where the all aspects of the evening are an escape from the norm.

From the moment you walk in, you are left to feel like the restaurant is open only for you. Greeted by the owners, seated by perfectly formal wait staff who know how to pay just the right amount of attention to the table. They are there when you need them and invisible when you don't.

Appetizers that are always a perfect prelude to an amazing meal.

And main courses that fit your desires for that evening. Its pretty rare to find a restaurant that is equally strong in fish, meat or vegetarian! And, its always fun to see what item from the garden is going to make its way into the dishes. We've been twice this year, and each time its like the Chef runs out to the garden just before your meal. Last week the Sweet Snow Peas were in bloom. Its really wonderful to know your food really is local!

Horned Dorset is a MUST SEE! We plan to be there monthly just so we can see whats new!

“For true food lovers...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 10, 2013

On a recent visit to the Horned Dorset we were reminded again why we enjoy the longer drive out to Leonardsville, NY. It is not your typical "lets have a quick meal" restaurant - it is a fine and well priced food lovers destination where local products are being sourced (supporting local farmers gets a huge "+" in my book) and most veggies come from their own huge organic gardens. A place where you bring time to enjoy the location and the food, talk with the waiters to learn the specials (based on what is fresh out of the garden) and relax in an environment from times past. We enjoyed sweetbreads, an incredible garden salad, the duck confit, fresh scallops in a fine sauce and finished the evening off with a nice cognac in a warmed glass. I like to know where my food comes from and that it is prepared fresh. Thank you for a great evening!

“So wanted this to be perfect!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 2, 2013

This was my second visit to the Horned Dorset, after a many year absence (it is a distance plus in the middle of no where). The food was wonderful, but the execution so lacking. First, the dining room (we were shuffled off to the library) was unbearably hot. There were overhead fans, which were ineffectual. The room was so unbearable that we consumed two large bottles of water during dinner, as well as wine. We shared an artisanal cheese platter as an appetizer. There were interesting pairings, in particular, a mild soft cheese with honey. We both had the cod special, which included vegetables. The taste was wonderful, but alas, the fish was not sufficiently hot so i was forced to eat it quickly. I don't like cold fish (!) so i ate the cod first, before moving on to vegetables. I will not make the trek again.

“Dissapointment; resting on its laurels”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2012

We returned after years living away and came anticipating another wonderful meal. We were disappointed. Cutting corners and not prepared to serve what is on the menu? Unfortunately, yes...cooked ham substituted for proscuitto, feta for blue cheese. Steak unremarkable. Service was sharp and attentive, and entertaining. Next year we will wait to hear if things have improved.
This restaurant has been a landmark, in a tiny town far from anywhere, and so it was always a rich experience, made more so by the drive through beautiful country. We hope it rises again.
