“2 night paradise”
Reviewed January 8, 2013

Wrapped up my trip to Uganda by taking ferry to 12/27 & 28 Ssese Islands Beach Hotel in December 2012. It was a long crowded ferry ride (only one per day) but people were nice, food, drinks and restrooms were available. Couldn't see the Island at first but staff was waiting at pier to drive me to the facilities. Checkin was smooth and tea service was waiting. Enough time to rest, see a beautiful sunset and join in the communal BBQ. Nice opportunity to meet owners, staff and other occupants. Food was plentiful and tasted great. Next day was another day of sun, sand, good food, good accomodations. Even took a guided tour through rain forest. Then only complaint, I didn't stay longer. Would definately go back!!!

the rooms are just 2meters away from the Beach...clean and adequately spaced out. The staff o out of the way to make you feel at home. of course, the Hotel can undertake major renovation, especially of the sitting area of restaurant (worn out Pool table), but the other aspects like location, hospitality and cleanliness and sincerity overwhelms you.
I had visited this place with my friends and now intend taking my family there too......
magical sunset and sun rise, omnipresent variety of birds, pristine white sand, and PEACE....thats this place.
Its not far away from the ferry site (5minutes ride) which makes it ideal for the return trip at 8 am.

Room Tip: independent cottages are better and gives more privacy than four of them clubbed together. Ask and c...

imagine white soft sands at your doorstep, gentle white birds melodiously singing around your room, clean-cosy beach facing cottages with the perfect white-soft linen and to add to this some very nice very friendly staff who just love the fact that you came there!!

ssese islands beach hotel is a lovely place tucked away bang on the white beaches of ssese islands just walking distance from the ferry boarding point . i travelled there with my wife in feb 2012 during our kampala trip and oh boy! how we loved the place..

ok..the facts first lest i keep waxing eloquent! they provided free pick up from the ferry point ( standard policy for all guests ;) ) the staff was extremely courteous and friendly and they treated us like royalty..

rates were very reasonable . they provide bed & breakfast or a full board which includes lunch and dinner as well. the beach facing cottages were spacious, clean and had super huge french windows facing the beach which made it very very romantic.

they have a decent bar with a nice restaurant and although we reached late and could not go fishing or boating but we were told they could organize that during the day. the place itself is amidst tall african -canopy trees with birds flying all around..i had a great time watching birds with my binocular right from my verandah.

we left early next morning with the ferry back to entebbe which leaves at 0800 hrs and they provided us a free ride...the breakfast was delicious and sumptuous..watch out for the enormous quantity of food they serve as we ordered for two and could not even finish 1/2 of a single course! puny indian diets i guess.. ;)

my wife loved the romantic settings of the place and the evening sun set was simply breathtaking...it was a great grand finale of our trip to uganda and we came back wishing we had more time to spend at this lovely place by the lake before we took the flight home..

if romance and quiet cosy corner is what ye seek o busy man! this is just the right place..

Room Tip: well i guess all rooms are equally good! ya not looking for a wifi right when nature connects to you...

Yes, it could be cleaner, it looks old -it's really old- and it needs an in-depth renovation ... but for us it's been one of the best places of our Uganda's travel.
Location is excellent, facing the white sand beach, the lake and a magical sunset every evening. Should you like birding, just take your binoculars and sit in front of your room.
Coming from Entebbe by the "new" ferry it's an experience, enjoy the navigation and keep talking with local people.
Room is basic, but you are not going to spend your time there! We were lucky about flies and mosquitoes, although in bathroon walls there were some dead bodies.
We found food very good, and we suggest you to ask for tilapia prepared "african way". It's not on the menu, but if you ask for it ... may be they will share what they are preparing for themselves.
Staff is very kind and helpful, always with big smiles on their faces.
It's a pity it's not better maintained, if it was then we could rate it as excellent.

Pros:

- Location is beautiful. Very relaxing. The fine white sand is some of the softest we have had the pleasure of bathing on. And the warm lake is very inviting. Watch the sky turn red as the sun sets on the horizon.
- In the evening, dinner is served by way of a convivial outdoor barbecue on the beach, with an enormous log fire and music. Magical.
- The staff who greeted us upon arrival were very welcoming. They mistakenly put a 'Congratulations on your wedding' card in our room, thinking we were honeymooners! Who is to tell whether all guests receive the same warm welcome.
- Wild monkeys on site were nice to watch (and harmless)
- Close enough to the dock where the boat from Entebbe arrives/departs. Note: we actually arrived on the other boat (from Masaka) and were pickpocketed of several hundred dollars
- Food is quite tasty (and we are very choosy about our food)

Now for the Cons..:

- The reception area was absolutely filthy. It surely has not been cleaned in 10 years. We hope and pray that the kitchen was cleaner..
- The room was OK but the old bedsheets had holes in them, the TV didn't work, the bathroom was ancient (we dared not touch the towels). Walls covered in dead mosquitoes which have bitten the dust over the years..
- So.. I mentioned the magical barbecue. The problem is that the area is full of lake flies. It is truly impossible to keep them off your food. We grabbed our food (which was mostly very nice) and ran to our room to eat it before re-emerging for drinks and music later
- There are not enough sun beds to go around, and those that are there are very old!
- Breakfast was truly pitiful. A slice of bread, a cold boiled egg and a piece of melon. Our question about availability of juice was met with a blank face. There is no juice at this hotel. And you will pay a supplement if you prefer your egg fried rather than boiled.
- When we paid the bill upon check-out, we were charged for some items that we had not ordered, we were also charged for the water provided in the room

Summary:
- Location perfect. Properties are nice but the whole place is in desperate need of renovation. The price is very very cheap, but we'd much prefer to pay a bit extra and have a bit more cleanliness / food choices
- Staff are mostly very friendly, especially the manager and the shorter lady who greeted us on arrival.

Would we return? Yes, but we'll give it some time for them to take into account some of our suggestions
