“Total Paradise!”
Reviewed March 9, 2010

We spent the last week of our honeymoon at Fundu and it was truely amazing - so beautiful, relaxing and romantic. We very luckily got upgraded to a superior suite which was out of this world - so much space and a wonderful pool....it all felt truely decadant! The food and drink was excellent (we loved phoning up for cocktails in our private pool) and the waiting staff genuine (look out for Mouldy - we loved him!). My husband really enjoyed the diving and I made full use of the spa (wonderful massages).

We absoluetly love Africa and have stayed in a massive variety of hotels in the last 10 years - so very eco, some luxurious and some more rustic. But for the last week of our honeymoon where we did want luxury, we certainly felt Fundu had got it just right in terms of the mix of African culture and international standards...it's not a hotel which has lost touch with its location.

To give Fundu its dues it is a very beatiful place, the section of Pemba the resort is located in is stunning. It was a ver relaxing break from the safari we had just been on.

The massive problem I have with Fundu is the price if it was about half the price I would think it was great, though at the price it is, it just doesn't meet expectations.

Upon arrival at Chake Chake airport we were met by the hotel driver, who was the least friendly person I came across in Tanzania. We asked to go to a pharmacy, using a phrasebook to make sure he knew what we were asking for, he proceeded to tell us he didn't know the location of one in either Chake Chake or in Mkoani the port from which you catch your boat from. We accepted that, and decided to ask one of the managers on arrival, only for the driver to take a mobile telephone call 15 minutes into the journey, why couldn't he of called someone to find out the location of a pharamacy I don't know. It's not even it was a free trip, the hotel branded taxi was $55 each way for two passengers and you also have to add $25 each way for the boat transfer. According to the information booklet you recieve in the taxi he was meant to have offered us a cold drink but we didn't get one.
Upon arrvial at the hotel we were met by Matt one of the two managers, in fairness both the managers Matt and Annie are nice and are very helpful.

We stayed in the hillside / ocean view rooms the cheapest on offer at $740 per night. For this you get your room a tent, on a wooden platform, with a few fans, but no A/C I appreciate due the remote location and electricity issues on Pemba that A/C is probably not an option, but when your paying $740 per night perhaps they could maybe get some extra generators. We had the highest hillside room which gives you the advantage of some added privacy, as on the long walk up to our room you could see the sundecks on the other oceanview rooms. Equally on our sundeck there was no real privacy as the staff walking along the path could see us and vice versa. The room does have an amazing view, but then there are plenty of places around the world with a great view.

Alongside an ok room, you also get an "all inclusive" package, which gives you free beer, house red, white, and rose wine, and some select spirits (rum, gin, vodka and a few others), and soft drinks. Though not included in your "all inclusive" package were a large list of premium spirits including tequila, baileys, kahlua, pimms, martini, campari, jack daniels, southern comfort, smirnoff red each of which will set you back a minimum of $3 a shot, bearing in mind you have already paid for an all inclusive package this just seems like profitering. There is also an extensive list of cocktails you have to pay for, including the "Fundu-Politan" which contains vodka, triple sec, lime juice and bungo juice, which is $6, as the vodka should be free I am assuming you paying $6 for some triple sec?
This causes another issue, you have to sign for every drink you have be it free or otherwise which means everytime you sign for something you have to really check it to make sure that you are not getting charged extra for things you've not had, which is a real irritation.

To add to the general feeling of being ripped off, visit the shop where a bottle of sun screen will cost you $45, a pair of speedo swimming trunks will set you back $68, and a t-shirt $31.

The food was fine without being knockout, and the service was incredibly laid back which might help you relax, though once again at the prices you pay the service was sometimes too laid back and on numerous occastions things had to be reordered. At breakfast my coffee would arrive, then there would be a delay of a few minute and my wife's tea would arrive, a few minutes later the milk would arrive, and finally after another few minutes the sugar would arrive. This is the sort of service you might expect at places charging a tenth of the amount.

If you fancy some deep sea fishing this costs either $300 for 4-5 horus or $500 for 4-5 hours depending on what speed boat you pick.

I guess the whole of Zanzibar has over inflated prices due to the safari circuit, but even so, Fundu just seemed to be terribly over priced. Regretably this was my over whelming feeling upon leaving Fundu, and I couldn't imagine going back.

Dear Expectant Traveller,
My wife and I are not wealthy people but we have saved well and worked hard to stay in some pretty incredible hotels in our time. This has one predominant outcome, that we are sticklers for quality and value for money.
I know that you are, as we did for our honeymoon, looking for the place that is going to provide both and perhaps a little extra dash of magic. We have no hesitation in saying – look no further.

Writing this review is a tricky catch twenty-two for those that have been to Fundu, as we have a responsibility to pour our affection over the place at the time as wanting to keep it a little secret just for us. But I promised the Managers, Matt and Annie, after an incredible dinner on the beach, that I would try and do justice to a beautiful hotel.

You arrive by boat to the end of the elegant jetty and are greeted by Matt, who then introduces the remainder of the hotel to you. It’s a discovery as the rich greens of the jungle cover most of the buildings from the divinely calm beach, and yet the views from the rooms themselves are breath-taking.

We certainly recommend spending an evening at the jetty bar with a Kilimanjaro beer, or Fundu cocktail, diligently prepared by your own bar staff. It’s here that you will realise the sunsets over the water are something that no camera quite captures the beauty of, but you’ll have plenty of gorgeous evenings trying. Another treasure is that the snorkeling is just so impressive that my wife and I decided that the scuba wasn’t even necessary. Who knows what we would have seen had we tried the scuba in the azure blue waters around Fundu Lagoon! They are nothing short of remarkable.

The quality of service, the remarkably fresh food, the location and the sense of calm is extraordinary. You will undoubtedly lose yourself in the magic of Fundu Lagoon because it has more than it’s dash of the stuff, it pours it on you.
Enjoy!

We have just returned from a fabulous week at Fundu Lagoon in Pemba. Beautiful location, fabulously well appointed accommodation, amazing service all round, delicious food, relaxing pool. If you want to just get away from it all and be discreetly spoilt and well looked after, this is the place to go and certainly worth every penny. Very romantic too! It is very quiet with a visit to one of the three bars the highlight of any outing and as the little 'tents' (super smart & comfortable) are built into the hillside you have to be fit to handle the various levels. We chose a hillside ''tent' as those offer more privacy although the beach side suites at the lower level are also very spectacular. The whole complex is so well designed that it is virtually invisible from the lagoon yet it lies directly on it. I'm told the diving is very good and I enjoyed the water skiing. The whole ambience is wonderful.

Spent 1 week here on our Honeymoon after doing Safari in Masi mara. We wanted to relax in style and that is just what Fundu offers. The views from the balcony's are amazing. I did some diving which was very proffesionally ran with excellent dive sites. There were many other options of water activities or you could simply relax by the pool with a great choice of drinks. The food was superb, and served by friendly attentative staff. Had the best week we could have hoped for. This is a luxury holiday that is worth spending that extra cash for a special occasion.

Stayed for the last 4 nights of our honeymoon and could not have asked for anything more. Stayed in one of the superior suites which was amazing. Your own plunge pool and barely 10 yards from the sea. You can do as little or as much as your like. The scuba diving is apparently excellent, although we just went snorkelling off Misali Island. This was truly a holiday of a lifetime. It was first class all the way, the resort, the manager and the staff team and the chefs cooking was outstanding to say the least. Matt took great care to listen to his clients, he met them on arrival and throughout the walk to the room he was attentive and actively listening. He remembered I did not like fish so when it was the BBQ evening he laid on a substitute to suit me, it was fantastic. Matt and Anie were a team, they were thorough and looked after their clients. They certainly looked after us, this was a delayed 25th wedding anniversary for us and they gave us a bottle of champagne and upgraded our room for the last 3 days to superior and out of this world it really was, it was breathtaking. This was the most romantic week we have ever had together and definitely worth waiting for. Thank you to Matt, Anie and all the staff you made us feel really welcome and special and I really am trying to go back. Julie and Tommy Ryan
