Once you've driven through the crazy town of Port St. John's and you slowly make your way up to Amapondo, the ominous mountains and soft sea breeze overwhelms your senses. Monkeys, jungles, waterfalls!!!!!!!!
You offload after a 7 hour drive to welcomed by the freindliest, homeliest staff. You walk up the stairs and into the bar area, filled with colourful bits and pieces from all over the world. At the end of the room is Bongs the barman with a cold beer in his hand. He's smiling and it's all just for you!!! Once you've sat down, you will stay sitting... chatting with staff and tourists.... you WILL stay there all night, not wanting to go to bed because you will definitely miss out on the biggest party of your life and you know it!!!!
Not to mention the walks and excursions with Tim the owner!!! Mud caves, waterfalls, hikes, traditional ceremonies, cliff-hanging, surfing, swimming, laughing, giggling.... GOOD VIBES!!!
You will leave, after postponing your trip atleast 5 times... thats how Pondo fever works.... and you won't be able to contain the sadness you feel becase after even a few days, you have become part of their family.
Thanks guys.... I love you all!!!!!

I made the trip to Port St. Johns from Cape Town on my own. I flew to East London, stayed at night at the Sugar Shack (which I do NOT recommend - stay at Cintsa's Buccaneer's instead), then took the Baz Bus to Umtata, then Amapondo sent a shuttle to pick me up and take me to Port St. Johns. I am a young (27) female and felt rather safe doing this trip alone although my South African friends had concerns. I met up with a friend at Amapondo who was already there.

Amapondo was very welcoming. I had the best hamburger of my life at the bar there. The staff are great. The view is amazing of the river/beach/ocean. Short walk to the beach and nature reserve. Great hikes including the Blowhole and the Gap. The showers are great, outdoors showers with stones to keep the curtains from blowing, and palms growing on the other side of the wall. Best part is the people you meet - everyone is very open and outgoing. Might be hard to keep to yourself if that is what you are looking for though. Great critters - the hostel dog Flore was my favorite. A little black cat tried to snuggle up in bed with me at night, and one morning I woke up to monkeys running across the roof. At night drum sessions were fun.

Note: It rained much of the 4 days I was at Amapondo, and I still had a great time. Board games, chess, etc. and just lounging around are still fun here. Just keep in mind that summer (i.e. January) is rainy season on the Eastern Cape, so bring an umbrella/raincoat!

Drawback: Amapondo doesn't have internet. However, this may be a plus for some people who like to be out of reach. It gives you a reason to go into town to the internet cafe, where you can meet more interesting people.

Also - I had an AMAZING massage here overlooking the ocean in a little hut with little green lizards running over the ceiling. It was cheap - an hour or so for only $30.

Amapondo Backpackers is probably the best place we have stayed at through our trip to South Africa. The location is excellent - seaview from their tropical garden. We stayed in a double room, which was cheap and super clean and spacious. Very basic and nicely decorated. Also, the staff there is so nice and helpful, always in good mood and really helpful. And the food - cheap and amazing. Truely, we stayed there for five nights, but wanted to statymuch longer. We can only recommend this place to everyone. We'll certainly come back.

Had a great 2 nights at Amapondo. Tim our host was very friendly and had time to talk to everybody. Food and booze available at the bar, and random special night entertainment like drumming, poker nights.... The staff are fun and lead you on free activities during the day. Minutes from the beach. Definitely the best hostel we stayed in during a month in South Africa, and one of my best ever.
