We had eaten at the Interlaken about 15 years ago and wanted to give it a try again for my husband's birthday, as it was a great experience in the past. First I would like to say that my complaint has NOTHING to do with the quality of the food or the service of the wait staff. Both quality and service was excellent on that end. Our issue was with management. We were greeted awkwardly when we walked in the door, the owner stating that she had seen our name on a bag at Whiteface....we hadn't been there and it was very awkward as when we said that we hadn't skiied that day, she just kind of walked away. We were seated by the waitress who was friendly and warm and answered any questions we had. About five minutes after we sat down, two children (around ages 4 and 8 or so) came out from a back office and began to run around, running through the dining room and into the kitchen. We made our reservation for 5:30 and were the first ones seated, and were glad that around 6 pm another couple came in and were seated in the same dining room with their 8-9 year old daughter. We had our 7 and 10 year old at our table who were equally as quiet as their daughter. However, after only a minute or two of being seated, the owner went over with her grand-daughter (one of the ones that had been running around) to the other table, introduced her grand-daughter to their child and then proceeded to make a play date at the table. Both children sat next to each other and were playing and doing each other's hair. Awkward and weird, but didn't disturb us yet. What became loud and obnoxious was when the grandmother/owner would walk back and forth from the dining room, into the kitchen, back into the office near the door and around and around. She talked loudly, the younger grandchild ran around, and everyone was talking as if they were the only ones in the whole inn. It was intollerable by the time we got our salad course and my huband and I wished we could have just walked out. We ate our main course as quickly as we could and asked for the check. The waitress kept asking us if we were enjoying the food and actually apologized for the noise level and distractions in the dining room. We explained that we wanted to leave and asked for the bill again, but also made sure she knew that it was not the food or her service that was the problem. We expected the total amount of the bill, and honestly we wouldn't have cared that we spent over $175 for two appetizers, two drinks, and four meals IF WE COULD HAVE ENJOYED IT. However, the noise level was so obnoxious that we all left wound up and a ball of nerves. Paying a huge bill like we did was hard to swallow when we didn't enjoy ourselves at all and honestly wanted to run from the place.
Management has NO BUSINESS being in business. The female owner never came to our table to ask us how our meal was, set the tone for the noise level in the small dining room (which had only our table and the other couple in it), and allowed her young grandchildren who she was apparently babysitting while she was managing the inn to run all over as if it was her house. I will NEVER return to the Interlaken, and I can only assume others have had similar experiences there, as when we left around 7:30, there were only two other couples eating in the pub side of the place, and the couple I mentioned above. Do yourself and your nerves a favor and go somewhere else.
