We were up for a little spring skiing and the brown dog came highly recommended by friends in the city. We made a reservation on a thursday night and were seated at a table window side with a beautiful view of mirror lake. This little place was charming and personable. Bill ( the owner ) recommended the perfect wines to accompany our dinner, My wife had a veal chop which was perfection ! I had a banana leaf wrapped sea bass which had a coconut curry sauce that blew my mind. We ended our evening with a lovely port and a coffee caramel creme brulee. An amazing way to end our week of skiing in lake placid !

“Good but Expensve”
Reviewed February 20, 2009

For the prices they charge the food at this restaurant should blow you away and it doesn't come close to doing that. It is very good but the question of the price/value equation remains. We ordered three dishes: an escargot 'light entree' to share as an appetizer, the macaroni and cheese 'light entree' and the rack of lamb special. The escargot dish was delicious with a creamy garlic sauce that we sopped up with bread. The macaroni was also very tasty but it came in a ramekin that could not have had more than an 8 ounce capacity and for $16 it just isn't quite worth it. The rack of lamb was $39. The positive is that it was a full 8-rib rack which is a lot of food. It was undercooked but better that than the alternative. The sauce was just okay as there was too much garlic (some raw) and the mashed potatoes were pasty. The twice cooked potato soup that came with the meal was very, very good. On the other hand, the oil and balsamic dip (why do LP restaurants do this?) was atrocious...I am sure they used vegetable oil and not olive oil...ugh! Our waitress was very friendly and responsive. Overall, some great flavors and some near misses. but just too much money for what you get.

“Dog days at the Brown Dog”
Reviewed January 31, 2009

If you want to pay a high price for at best a mediocre meal then the Brown dog is the place to go. We recently ordered two NY strip steaks and two filet mignon dinners. The strip steaks were very grizely and one of the worst cuts of steaks we have ever had. The filets were very dry and one was cooked well instead of medium rare. We never write reviews for restaurants but this experience prompted us to rebuke the 5 star reviews we read before making our reservations. The service, atmosphere and wine were very good but the meal was certainly not worth what we paid.

“Dinner with friends”
Reviewed January 1, 2009

We went to the Brown Dog to celebrate a friend's birthday. The meal and the service were very good although not inexpensive. I would return here for a special occasion.

“Nice but Pricey”
Reviewed December 16, 2008

Excellent food, good menu, nice wine list ( like the 3 ounce wine "taste") but the filet mignon is 42 dollars - its not cheap and most wine is 10 -15 a glass. But the ambience is great (something Cafe Rustica is weak on) - nice music with a water veiw - and not crowded on a Friday night.
