Calamari was cold and rubbery. 25$ Filet mignon was ordered med rare came practically raw. Also had no seasoning. Mashes potatoes were disgusting, cold, lumpy, no seasoning. Pizza was good but not very warm. Chocolate mousse and creme brulee were decent. For all of those courses we were there for nearly two hours.

Wood fired pizza sounds good on a cold day, doesn't it? We should have checked the reviews first. One word to sum up our experience? SLOW!

We arrived at 2pm to find the restaurant empty with the exception of two small tables. We sat down and ordered the fries appetizer, a salad, and 2 pizzas. We instantly realized that it was FREEZING inside. The other handful of customers were wearing their coats.... We too opted to keep our ski jackets on. After we ordered, we waited.

And waited.

And waited.........

Finally we noticed two guys walk into the open view kitchen to begin cooking! Thank god! We were starved. It took 1 hour for our Caesar and fries to arrive. We were getting annoyed by this point. Then it took 30 minutes for our pepperoni pizzas to arrive. The waitress didn't offer any apology until after we received the check. In total our pizza lunch took over two hours! By the time the pizza did arrive, we were the ONLY customers. Not sure what the problem was..... Plenty of staff. We figured lack of management.

Won't be surprised if this place shuts down.

Beware. The reviews here are true.

Our visit was an attempt to try Nicola's as it was next door to our hotel. We read the reviews and it weighed on the side of poor. We went anyway. We ordered our meals and appetizers.

The appetizers were polished off quick and dinner was served. Our main coarse for our family of four was not finished as the meals were not to our standards for a Mediterranean cuisine for the price of the servings. Our daughter could not bite through her green beans and mashed potatoes were lumpy. It was not offered to her but later we confirmed that she had choice of potatoes or mashed. Unfortunately the mashed was brought the table.

We read about the extra fee for pop (soda), yes we are from Canada. we stayed with water only. The only meal taken home was pizza all our other meals were not edible. Therefore not to our satisfaction.

As a result of our wait staff and poor food quality we left only a $7.00 tip on our $118.00 check.

As we were leaving we were met at the door by our server who complained that it was less than 10% of check. Never in our lives have we had to justify our reason for leaving a tip if any was even deserved. She commented that we did not say anything during our meal. We new it was a mistake to try this restaurant and we wanted out of there asap.

We mentioned to her she did get a tip but unfortunately due to poor food quality and service we tipped as to the experience. Our experience was TERRIBLE!. We wanted to discus our experience to the manager or owner about our door front encounter with his service staff.

That will be part 2 of the experience. “Rudest Experience in Lake Placid”......Please read the reviews as this is a reason they are only ranked 74 out of 93 in Lake Placid.

We wanted a light supper so we each ordered an appetizer of bruschetta. It was over-abundant with more than the typical tomato bruschetta, it had tapenade and a humus dip, as well as dipping olive oil. It came with 6 slices of toasted bread. One order would have been sufficient for two! and considering the price, we were extremely surprised. Service was expedient and friendly. It was quiet that night so they sat us on the side of Grill 211.

Let's face it. Lake Placid is a mess. My friends and I went there one weekend night - first stopping by the Lake Placid Brewery (1.5 hour wait) then stopped at Milano North which wouldn't even give us a number on how long the wait was. That's how we found ourselves at Nicola's - there was no wait and the staff seemed friendly.

I don't know why so many people are down on Nicola's. Is it the best food in the world? No. But there are some pretty good choices that allow for a great meal. The free bread is pretty amazing. Nicola's would do well to serve it hot, but even at room temperature, It's fantastic. We took the extra bread home and had it for breakfast the next day.

We started with appetizers - the salads are huge, with the greens fresh and the dressing excellent. I ordered the Italian. If you order one with meat, this could certainly be a meal in and of itself. The Calabrese (tomato and mozerella) was acceptable. Not bad, but not good. Stick with sharing a salad. Those salads are good.

For my entree, I ordered a small Bolognese. Again, this was pretty good - nothing to write home about but filling and acceptable. My friends on the other hand, chose more wisely. Two ordered the Sausage con Verde. This was actually amazing. The sausage was extremely flavorful and the light sauce it was in was amazing - the garlic was just the right amount and the greens were again, very fresh. Another friend ordered the pizza. Pizza at Nicola's is a must. It was a broccoli rabe pizza with a nice spice in the sauce and the pizza dough was soft and delicious. I would say that this is artisanal pizza that rivals some places in NYC.

The service was great, with a friendly and attentive waitress. All in all, this is a good spot. Certainly, you have to choose wisely from the menu (go with the pizza for sure) and you will have a great meal. At a great price (filling meal at around $20 (with tip and tax) a head). Also, a nice place for familes and kids.

Don't be feared by the other reviews - i don't know why they are so negative. Their negativity caused me to write this review. It's a good, solid place without the craziness that sometimes can be Lake Placid.
