I took my 19 yr. old son to Mount Van Hoevenberg (MVH), in March 2013 for his first time ever skiing. We went during the week, so it was less crowded and cheaper.
The trails were impeccibly groomed and wide enough for plenty of skiers to use. We started out on the easiest trails on the first day, and worked out way up to a difficult one the following day.
That was probably not the best decision on our part, but we did very well regardless. Since it was not too busy during the week, it was less embarrassing when we fell. LOL!
I have been skiing for over 5 years now, and this by far has been the best skiing I ever did!!!
I also want to say that there are emergency crew around all the time for help if needed. I felt really safe with them there. There were some really scary spots that someone could get seriously hurt. It's a good idea to follow the rules and pay attention to signs and plan your time accordingly.
I can't wait to go back this year! I was just in Lake Placid for the weekend (Oct.18-20), and it already feels like ski season. :)
