Alte Kalkofen Lodge
Ranked #1 of 12 Keetmanshoop B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 13, 2014

A fabulous 2 day stay with hosts ranking among the best we have ever experienced in a lodge/B&B, courteous, attentive and utterly professional. Real attention to detail and excellent cuisine worthy of a Michelin rating, a big + is that they cater so well for vegetarians - it is after all Namibia.

And by the way an excellent location for a 1/2 day trip to Fish River Canyon through the ever changing spectacular semi-desert.

Alte Kalkofen is a lovely place, very quiet, even though it’s not far from the main road. It’s actually only 2.5km off the B4 so also a good place to take a lunch break, they do a good meal/sandwich/apple pie.
It’s a nice distance between Fish River Canyon and Sossusvlei or Luderitz , but well worth spending time there for it’s own sake. If you’re interested in plants and flowers it’s a must, they have a wonderful collection of Lithops, that’s Living stones, and unless you’re very dedicated it’s probably the easiest way to see them in Namibia. Frikkie and Hilde can tell you everything about these weird little plants, and are very knowledgeable about everything to do with nature.
We had a lovely bungalow, full of quirky details, there was both an inside and an outside shower. Sitting outside on the terrace was a pleasure. Dinner in the starlight was terrific, as was breakfast, I think the food here was a class higher than just about anywhere we ate in Namibia. We enjoyed the swimming pool too, like everything else it was very clean, and well arranged.
They have a fuel station, and filling up is a good idea because there isn’t another till Aus, we didn’t and regretted it when the yellow fuel light came on with 100km to go!
We highly recommend Alte Kalkofen!

We had a warm welcome after a long days ride. The location is breath-taking. The chalets are well equipped with no TV's which make it 10 times better as you have a sundeck facing a dry river bed and a waterhole which all just fit together. Do yourself the favour drive the 90 odd km's from Keetmanshoop or if you are on your way to Luderitz This is the stop over stop, your will receive a very warm welcome and excellent food This is a must.

What a great place to stay. We were here for an overnight stay on our way to fish river. We didn't expect it to be so beautiful. The rooms are located in little private houses with a sundeck overlooking the beautifull surroundings. These rooms and central building are styled beautifully in a clean, modern but still cosy way. Absolutely fabulous was the hospitality and cooking by Frikkie and Hilde. They really make you feel at home! It was so wonderfull that we, on our way back from fish river, decided to make a stop at Alte Kalkofen for one last piece of delicious apple pie. We really felt like we made some new friends. We will come back and next time we'll stay longer.

Hilde and Frikkie, thank you for creating unforgettable memories.

With an interesting an slightly different architecture, this lodge offers te perfect opportunity to lean back and relax, while enjoying it's breathtaking location and superb food. If going south in your Namibia trip, this gret place to stop over.

We spent some days at the lodge for a family wedding. It was spectacular. The entire estate is designed with lots attention to detail and we loved every tiny corner of it! The service is perfect and the food is great! All lodges have a beautiful view and are very stylish. We loved it and recommend a stay at the lodge! N+J

If ever a place could be described as a hidden gem, it is this lodge. Built in recent years, accommodation is in lovely light bungalows with views over the dry river bed and bush. Everywhere you look is imaginative, quirky and fun. It has great taste and style originating from charming owners Frikkie and Hilde. They have a genius for taking old items they have found or collected and turning them into objet d'art or working items. Food was excellent and equal to the best we had in a month in Namibia. It has a waterhole to provide 'bush television' while you enjoy a sundowner on the terrace and eat dinner. Free wi-fi in the public areas. Only an hour from Keetmanshoop and 1km off the tarred B4, I have no hesitation in recommending Alte Kalkofen to those who appreciate a country location done with real style.
