“Wonderful place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 14, 2013

Absolutely wonderful place. The setting along the river is stunning and we absolutely loved our stay there and had great fun to check out the bathrooms and toilets, which are all unique and right in the nature (don't worry, you cannot be seen!!). It is a little expensive (for a campsite) though!

This is certainly different to most of the places we stayed, the accomadation is fine once you get used to a tree growing in the loo, but as we were staying in one of the tree houses I suppose we should have expeced it.

The food, especially the vegetarian, was excellent as were the staff , but don't park on their grass or kids cos they love them both.

The swimming pool in the river was great to look at but we decided to leave it to the younger crowd to take the plunge.

We will definitely be coming back to this great place and would recommend it to anyone who is in the Caprivi Strip.

Ngepi can be considered as one of the few, and probably most notable backpackers-kind-of-place. Located on the Okavango riverside, it offers beautifully shaded camping spaces near the river, thick and green grass included. Another, and more expesive option, is one of the tree houses. Service is efficient and friendly, food is quite good. Swimming pool is non existent, but you can use a "caged" part of the Okavango river to swim (cage keeps the hippo's and crocks out). Ngepi lowers your carbon footprint by using solar power to heat the showers and to provide electricity. Be aware that there can be no hot water early in the morning, and electricity is not always available. Showers and toilets are open-air, no walls, separation from the outside world is done by reed walls. They don't serve beef or fish, because of environmentally considerations. The camp is located 4,5km's from the tarred main road, and depending on weather conditions, not accessible for normal cars. You don't need a 4x4, but higher clearance is useful. I heard that Ngepi offers transfers from Divundi, so better check with them if you have a normal car (VW Polo style) They offer excursions, all can be booked at the reception. Mahango Game Reserve is almost litterly around the corner. This is your place if you like nature, and environmentally aware type of people. If you want luxury, or environmentalism is not your cup of tea, you'd might like something else more.

Apart from the fact the camp hasn´t good food service, i´ve got everything what I expected - camp for two nights near Okawango river, but nothing special.. Ngepi camp has one of the best prepared place for tents in Namibia - grass, surface. There is potencial to improve everything what you can imagine. Camp need better bathrooms, service, food, more activities. Short distance away is little park Mahango NP.

Room Tip: I can recomend this place for couples and families for one day stay with tents.

This camp is beautiful and very funny. There are tin baths on the river bank and loos with views. A lot of love and care has gone into creating the place. However there was a distinct lack of atmosphere, and the staff didn't help that. Perhaps because everything is so spread out.

Our group of 10 stayed at Ngepi for 2 nights and loved it. Situated on the banks of the Okavango river, the campsites have plenty of shade and grassed areas to pitch tents on. The ablutions are quirky and fun "bush" ablutions with open roofs so you can "ablute" under the stars. Solar heating systems provided hot water for the showers, but meant showering needed to take place in the early evening - early mornings mean cold showers. There is a pool and restaurant/bar and plenty of activities which can be organised on site. Fishing, boating, river rafting, birding, game viewing etc. Or, laze around the pool with a cold drink in hand and watch the river go by! We loved it and would recommend it to anyone.

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2012

We visited Ngepi Camp in June 2012 with Mpafa Travel. We stayed in a tree house on the edge of the Okavango and were entranced with the situation and views. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, but the rustic reed huts are not designed for cold. It was mid-winter and at night the temperature dropped below zero. A cold wind blew through the reed walls of our hut and we had to sleep with beanies on to stop our heads from freezing. The solar panels that heat the geysers do not get direct sunlight until after 10 am so the water is tepid at best. Our complaints about cold showers were ignored. Only after our Mpafa guide complained, did management check the solar panels and see that they were covered with dust and therefore the sun's rays could not do their work. It is a wonderful place, but the management leaves a lot to be desired. If you visit, I would suggest going in autumn or spring. The bird life is amazing.

Room Tip: Choose a tree house on the banks of the river. Watch out for hippos after dark. They wander about...
