Having lived in northern Mozambique for almost 2 years, I have seen my fair share of crummy, overpriced, poorly staffed, and poorly maintained places. This is not one of them. Beautiful airy rooms, friendly staff, lovely pool, great location on the center of the Island, and a very good restaurant. The fact that you get all of this for a very reasonable price makes this a hotel worth staying at again and again.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms with windows that look out on the street. Can be a bit noisy at night

Charming, quaint, and cozy hotel. Old Portuguese mansion turned into a hotel. Perfect location on the island - in the middle of everything. No internet, but I took this as an opportunity to disconnect. Bed mattress was not great, but it was fine for a few nights alone. The room is very simple but spacious with high walls and lovely wood floors. I stayed in a room with a non-adjoining bathroom located down the hall. It was assigned to my room (only I had the key), so not used by anyone else. For the price, this was acceptable to me. Room had A/C but no TV (again, disconnect!). The food in the restaurant is fabulous - some of the best on the island. Don't miss the homemade jam on bread in the morning. I bought a jar to bring home. The pool is clean and lovely - perfect during the day when its too hot to be walking around the island. I took a tour of the island for $20 - ask for Samuel. He's English speaking, well-informed, and pleasant personality. Ilha de Mozambique is a very special place - not to be missed if you're in this part of the world.

rooms with unusually high walls are well equipped. slow wi-fi internet access is available only in the lobby, and it can be used by only two users simultaneously.

there's a good restaurant, but breakfast is small.

Room Tip: when it's hot, it's worth to pay a bit more for a room with a/c

Make the effort to get to Ilha; it's extraordinary - atmospheric and beguiling.

And Escondidinho is one of the best places to stay. My room was large and comfortable with a/c, fan and mosquito net, and plenty of space to store and hang clothes etc even if the bathroom was a little basic. The gardens are beautiful, shaded and relaxing and the large pool is an added bonus. The restaurant serves good, well-priced food and the service is charming (I didn't find it slow). The hotel is well-situated, right in the centre of town, and offers free wireless connection.

Highly recommended and good value.

While living in Mozambique with husband and first child we spent every new years in Ilha and stayed at beautiful escondidinho! Last time 2007-2008. No words to describe the beauty and coziness of the place, nice old style with its exquisite simplicity while offering high quality at all levels. Every detail is well taken care, every corner has a special touch, the garden and terrace is full of wonderful flowers and vegetation. The owners are fabulous, the staff is very kind and on top of that you can enjoy wonderful cuisine owned by a fantastic french couple (good professional and beautiful Joel). Hope they are still there. No doubt this is the place to go.
Hopefully we will be able to return there soon!

I have only tried the restaurant of Escondidinho, not the rooms. I preferred to stay in a guesthouse .

The atmosphere of the restaurant is magic, a really relaxing place, beautifully and carefully decorated, with a nice garden and swimming pool in front of you. The service is also very good and professional, a bit quicker than in other places in the Island (although here you really cannot rush!).

The location of the restaurant and hotel is very good, in the centre of the old stone city of Ilha. Anyways, in Ilha everything is very well located and easy to reach by walking!

I would certainly suggest to try the lobster (espetada de lagosta). I tried also camarao (prawn), espetada de marisco (mixed seafood) and other fish (I have been there several times to eat, it was my favourite place in Ilha!) and I always found the quality very high!

I had no idea about the kind of place I would find when I got here. What a surprise. Escondidinho is a excellent getaway on a long trip around Africa.
Although they rebuilt most of the place, it still have the nice old style, with pretty large rooms. Added to it, the atmosphere of the place, the good food and a swimming pool. I would definitely come back here, and I do not think you can find a place as good as this for the price in the island or even in other places in Mozambique.Their price table changes from room to room.

Wireless is free and you can connect from any part of the hotel.

As usual in north of mozambique wait for food can steal much of your day. So, wake up early if you have a lot to do and still wants to have breakfast.

You can have a excellent sleep quality in Escondidinho, although, on Saturdays, a dance club with extremely loudly music located about 100 meters away, can end up with your sleep. The Management of the hotel is trying to solve the problem.

Hotel is also connected to a tour agency which operates scuba diving.
