“Soverein Suites Nairobi...A touch of Old School Elegance”
Reviewed April 2, 2012

I passed by Sovereign Suites last week and loved it! The predominantly wooden interior did make the place special.

"The palatial building of this ‘boutique’ hotel residence is very different from any ordinary hotel, in particular when it comes to size. There are 11 spacious suites, 2 family suites and 2 presidential suites with walk in closets, furnishings and bathroom fittings of high quality."

Room Tip: The Presidential Suites are the most spacious. One has its own private Sauna.

When I last visited the Sovereign Suites in June, it was clearly very much a work in progress but with very promising elements already there to see for the trained eye.
This time round, I managed to actually stay there, ahead of the opening, and was able to see just how much progress had been made, but also how much more remains to be done to really open this little gem, 16 suites only, as a true 5+ star hotel.
The kitchen is still a work in progress, but turned out a superb range of dishes, prepared to me by their Executive Chef Andrew Manso and with their Food and Beverage Manager Paul Sommes keeping me company, a good choice as it turned out as I was indeed the only guest and we had a lively conversation over developments in Kenya, him being Kenyan born.
The chef started us off with a superb vegetable soup, followed by a terrine so good I could have stopped the meal there for two or three more helpings.
The fillet mignon was exactly done the way I liked it, followed by lamb chops.
The desert was a coconut tart and melted in my mouth.
The next morning breakfast was by order, a great big change from buffets seen elsewhere, and the waiter recited the available dishes by heart.
I was able to see the other suites being readied and while it was generally expected the Sovereign Suites would be now be open, this will now not be the case until at least the first quarter of next year.
Then I must come back and sample the dishes I saw on the start up menu, taste some of the fine wines which will be available for guests and club members and enjoy a weekend of pure culinary and hospitality bliss. Watch this space.

Room Tip: Ask for the Penthouse Suite ... and don't get lost in it, because it is really that big ...

The Sovereign Suites will only open in October, but I managed to take a sneak preview, being amongst other things a travel writer.
A former top of the pops residence is being converted into a 16 all suites residence, with full service of course, and a couple of 2 and 3 bedroom apartments looked after too by the staff already on site and being trained up towards opening day.
The new property will be managed by Sun Africa Hotels, already having several safari properties under their ownership and management, and while the size of the property seems small, here size clearly does not matter, to the contrary.
Already the entrance is impressive, and the lounge reception is wood paneled as is much of the public areas. A typical London Club like atmosphere is being created, hand crafted leather furniture casually arranged around the fire places found everywhere, as temperatures at night in the Limuru hills, some 2.300 metres high, can get quite cool. Meals are going to be served either inside or on the terrace outside, weather permitting that is, as the morning chill, often combined with swathes of fog, may make guests feel more welcome and certainly warmer indoors.
There will be a full restaurant with silver service when the Sovereign Suites open later this year, for lunch and for dinner, and I would expect that smart casual is the least of the options for guests and that many will opt for formal dinner suits.
The size and quality of the suites is already impressive and the sample room gave a clear indication of what luxuries guests can expect, including the finest toiletry lines for the bathrooms, many of which sport a jacuzzi bath and super-sized shower cabin.
Many of the suites have access to the upper terrace and the Presidential Suite is, while not yet ready, fit for visiting Presidents and dignitaries without doubt, security questions both asked and answered.
The property sits on dozens of acres of extended farm land with a grand view into the Limuru hills and has space for future expansion, maybe serviced villas set into the down hill slope.
A fully equippped gym and spa, heated swimming pool, steam room and sauna are awaiting guest on opening day and a full sized pool table in a dedicated pool room invites those willing to play a frame or two.
Undoubtedly a fine addition to the top end of the hotel scene in Nairobi and worth waiting for the opening day, in October or thereabout.
A full review around opening time will then also allow to answer a few more questions on service, food and the overall appearance but I don't think I will be disappointed.

Room Tip: Best room - Presidential Suite with all trimmings!
