“set in lush tropical gardens, good value for money, rooms need refurbishment”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2013

Stayed: March 2013, B&B

Hotel grounds: Fantastic tropical gardens with monkeys and african birds. Very lush. and well maintained. Possibly the best feature of the hotel. The building are low rise.

Location: Plenty of facilities, tour operators and restaurants just outside the hotel. Monkey park in a walking distance.

Beach: The beach in front of the hotel is greatly erroded. Large sand bags are used to stop the errosion which is necessary but unsightly.

Pool: Two pools, one is quiet the other one is livelier with a swim up bar. Both pool areas are very nice. The livelier one is very deep (3m). It is hard to get sunbeds near the pool in the sunnier area unless the pool guys are tipped, in which case they will put your tower out for you every day early morning (before sunrise) to the same spot. Other option is to get to the pool no later then 7am each morning and reserve a sunbed. The daily routine of guests pilgrimiging to the pool just before & around sunrise was comical. This practice is a bit annoying though, however will be encouraged by the pool attendants because of the tips.
There are books and magazines by the pool, left by other guests.

Breakfast: Nice outdoor seating area. The buffet breakfast is adequate but not extensive. 3 types of fruit, bread, some cereal, fry up (potato, sausage, bacon, egg, beans), preserves, one sort of cold meat and cheese. It is fine, never left hungry, but most things are of the processed kind.

Room: This is the "worst" bit about the hotel. Small rooms with minimum decoration. The room is very dark because the only window&door opens up to a communal balcony, so to maintain privacy the dark curtains always had to be drawn. Bathroom is small and the tiles on the wall had fungi on them. Room cleaned each day. Only two small soaps provided. Air conditioning funcioned well. Safe is provided for about £15 a week. Always had hot & plenty of water. No coffee and tea making facilities.

Staff: Always smiling and polite with guests. However there is a tipping culture (pool) and this is the only place that we were outright asked for a tip! As a result we were always just a bit uncertain wheter they were genuinely kind or just fishing for tips.

Other: "dreaded" bumsters failed to materialize. Never had any harassment from anyone outside the hotel. Yes, people were offering their services but stopped as soon as we declined them and moved on. The only time I got harrassed was at Paradise Beach when I took a mile stroll on the beach without my husband. That was really annoying but the only time in the Gambia that bumsters somehow spoiled my enjoying the country.

Ask your travel agent to inform about the situation of the dog's on the private beach.
Good hotel, nice garden, good bed, very claen room, goog locate close to restaurants & bars, vriendly staff at the pool and beach, but the beach bar and restaurant only good for beer and snack, (ot so friendly and 15% tax). Beach in front of the hotel....bbbrrrr.
But if you have a hart don't go there if they don't help the poor dog's. It's a disgrace how they suffer. Their airs in blood, covert with flies, skinny, some starving, desiring to a pleasant slap on the back. AND IT'S A PEANUT FOR THE MANAGMENT OF SUCH A LARGE HOTEL TO HELP THEM, and hotel guests will love to be there without having pain in there hart. Im a belgium, and say thanks to every one from England. They have a hart !. 3week's in march

Room Tip: Rooms in block J, M, N are close to the 2 pool's and reception.

This was our third consecutive trip to the Senegambia hotel and we have always had a good time and will return. The staff are all very friendly and helpful and go out of their way to assist when asked. I do concur that the hotel management need to consider spending some time and money on the accommodation which has not changed much since we first went there 13 years ago. The location of the hotel is good and the grounds are well kept, abundant wildlife is in evidence such as birds, lizards and monkeys. I would suggest that when in West Africa many people expect European standards, this will not be the case, so go on holiday with an open mind and you will find no better winter break than the Gambia.

We arrived late evening and checked straight in very friendly atmosphere we were shown to the room basic but clean we had two single beds we were offered another room but we loved the location of the room so we just pushed the beds together . We did get a couple of mozzy bite on the first night even though we were covered in deet . The next day I decided to put mozzy tent up but no where to tie it up but managed to find a hole and twisted a bit of coat hanger in there and reception arranged for the room to be sprayed within 5 mins they were there spraying and all was good . Breakfast was very varied no complaints there . The only thing which I was not happy about was the safe in the room they are looked after by an outside company we paid for the two weeks the next day I closed the safe and it would not reopen we had the company come and reopen it manually he advised us to only keep the safe door open for less than a minute or it will lose its code 3 times we had them out to it very annoying the only other issue was people putting towels on loungers around the pool and not being there the pool lads would move them if you struggled to find one . The monkeys around the grounds are amazing . would definetly recomend this hotel really enjoyed it..

The location of the hotel is great, just at the end of the strip where the majority of the restaurants and shops are. The room itself was basic but clean (our cleaner even introduced himself to us and explained to us what he was going to do every day). The beach is very eroded but if you walk (especially to the left), there are better ones (and you can find bars where you don't have to pay for the beds). The only problem we encountered was, unless you paid a pool attendant, that you could not find a sunbed by the pool.
We had a problem with the hot water in our room. The day we arrived (Sunday) was ok, but in the afternoons it was not getting hot. We complained to the hotel but nothing was done, so we had to complain to the rep, and then only worked for one day. Apart from this, we had no issues within the hotel and will stay there again when we return

Stayed at the Senegambia Beach for 2 weeks from March 7th, and was assured by some of the many, many returning guests that this was the best time of the year to travel. It is nowhere near a 5-Star property, but it does not try to be. What you see is exactly what you get - comfortable rooms, wonderful grounds surrounding the accommodation blocks, a lovely beach which has definitely had its share of problems due to erosion - and all around you can see the efforts being made to redress the balance, very nice pool areas with plenty of sunbeds, some amazing flora and fauna that makes the area its home, a more than decent breakfast buffet (it puts some "5*" hotels that I have stayed in to shame) but the most important thing that this hotel has is its people. These are among the top 2 reasons why I believe most guests return as much as they do. We saw guests arriving being welcomed back like family members that had been away for far too long - and this hospitable culture extaends to way outside the hotel grounds - it is as if the entire country is glad that you are there!

The hotel caters for mosts tastes; there were single travellers, young couples, some families and a good number of guests from a more senior generation - yet none of these age groups seemed out of place or to cause any others any inconveniences.

There are 2 pools. The one nearsest the reception area is the quieter of the 2, with no music being played or animation activities. The livlier pool is nearer the beach, with a swim-up bar, and full access to the beach and beach bar/restaurant. The pool boys will look after your favourite sunbeds for you - yes, they are free to use but for guaranteeing your favourite bed a tip of around a pound a day (50 Dalasi) is no expense at all. A lot of the animation activiies go on around he livlier pool, with water aerobics, water polo, water volleyball and loads of land games and activities as well - the animation team are superb and are always ready with a smile and a joke to start your day off.

We did a few of the excursions on offer from our rep, mostly the cultural stuff to learn more about the region and its people, and can honestly say that they were all very good value. There are, of course, outside companies that will do the same sort of tours, but we preferred to stay with the company that we came with.

The highlight of the hotel is the wildlife, though. With the monitor lizards in he little rock pool and the 2 species of monkey that pay a daily visit to the hotel from the Bijilo Forest Park next door. The Green vervet monkeys come to the poolsides in search of food from guests' bags and the Red Colubus monkeys will spend their time more in the trees and on the rooftops of the acommodation blocks - although both species will allow humans to get quite close to them. The downside to this is, of course, the brainless people - and I include the British in this - that will happily feed the monkeys in order to get that "natural" wildlife picture. Despite there being notices up all around the hotel requesting that the animals not be fed, some people completely disregard this without thinking what their actions are ultimately doing to the feeding patterns and behaviour of these wonderful creatures. This is the one thing that the hotel should be much, much tougher on with guests. If you want to see these monkeys, then walk 5 minutes from the hotel into the Bijilo park and see them in their more natural habitat.

Two simle questions need answering, though: 1. Would I return here in the future? and 2. Would I advise my friends and family that the hotel is worth visiting? The answer to both is a resounding "YES!!!!"

Room Tip: We were in "E" Block, far enough away from reception that you don't get much noise, an...
