Decent enough place with a great location close to Lake Tana. The water is hit and miss which is annoying but not the end of the world. The view of the main street is nice and if you are on the 1st level (what we call 2nd level in NA) you can see the Lake. The restaurant is decent as well. The staff could be friendlier but they weren't rude, just not extremely helpful. Also, they forgot to pre-book our minibus to Gonder which caused a bit of a problem, but more of a minor inconvenience. Bring a mosquito net also, there are a billion in Bahir Dar and the nets always have holes.

Where does one start about this place. We had booked a twin room, and yes that's what we got, but the headboard had been sawn in half to make to, the table was in half, this was taking all to literally. Toilets, well 50 50 chance of them working. Running water not at all times and hot water was a luxury. I went to turn on the side light only to find that no plug on the end. The power points did not work which meant having to leave our phones at reception which was that secure. This area is said to be not got for malaria and this hotel had no nets and windows that did not shut. There was however a hook on the ceiling to take a net. Not a hotel I would go to again.

This is the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. The staff is very rude and the place is very noisy. The toilet had a broken seat and didn't flush. The rugs are stained. The window curtains didn't cover anything. I hated that place and will never recommend. Right after we saw the room, the staff said we couldn't get a refund.

The rooms are a bit tired, but apparently it's being refurbished. The WiFi was blisteringly fast which was a refreshing change (the router was right outside our room). We had hot water for the showers the whole time we were there, and breakfast was provided in the room rate each morning. Reception wasn't that friendly or very much help when it came to recommending tourist attractions or helping with organising etc, but the Ghion Hotel down the road organises daily trips to the falls and to the monastries. The price was reasonable - Birr330 a night for a twin with ensuite and breakfast included. We had a lake view and experienced no power cuts while staying there. The restaurant serves acceptable food for dinner, but across the road at Lake Short Restaurant is better for a meal right on the lake.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a lake view. A room further away from the restaurant balcony is quieter. If...

It's in a central position, near the lake. Phone 058 220 1436 for reservation. It's one of the older hotels in town, with about 60 rooms. Currently (Nov 2011) it's undergoing refurbishment one space at a time, and will probably be quite pleasant when done. It has a comfortable-looking lounge area, lots of wood - and that makes it just a little different from the other hotels in town. If you're there on business: the tables in the rooms are too small for comfortable work. All rooms have balconies, and there is a large terrace area / restaurant. There us no internet except for reported dial-up options in the business centre, but there are reportedly plans to get Wi-Fi set up ‘soon’.

Certainly it is not the best option to spend a few nights in Bahar Dar in Dib Anbessa but for one night should be ok. Rooms are tidy and clean but could be more spacy. Bathrooms are ok, at least you have hot water all the time and clean towels (they change them everyday). Breakfast is included in price but don't expect too much: scrambled eggs, plain omlette or toasts with jam + tea or coffee is all you can get. The staff is not very helpful in organizing trips to monasteries or Tis Yssat, even asked for a taxi to the airport they told me the price is 160 birr (which in fact is 100% more than usual price).
The price for double room in February 2011 was 400 birr per day.

Stayed here two weeks with our Habitat for Humanity group (hi guys!!). Bahir Dar has only one hotel that might meet north am/euro standards, the Kuriftu, but do you really want to live in luxury with the standards outside of the hotel grounds at such stark contrast? The Dib Ambessa is on par with most other 'moderate' hotels in BD and having visited most of them for lunch or dinner, I think I'd pick the DA as the best choice. Yes the rooms are quite run down. The worst is the bathrooms which do have toilets and (sometimes) hot water, but are very mouldy. The rooms are kept as clean as possible, and while the linens are well-worn everything was clean. Bring your own pillowcase if you are picky. Also the windows do not fit properly anymore so bugs were occasionally a mild problem, but only when it rained. There are mosquito nets but rarely used them. Laundry service was a great help. DA's restaurant is the best in town, in my opinion. Wide range of choices on the menu (we ate bf and lunch here almost every day for 2 weeks). Food was always good, although service choppy. Very friendly but just not what you're used to at home. Food comes out in unpredictable waves. Try the 'fish finger!" The balcony facing Lake Tana was our fave hangout and they don't care if you sit there without ordering anything. Close to everything. Can walk anywhere. This is the advantage DA has over Lake Tana resort, which is beautifully situated on the lake but quite a distance from "main street" - we never did learn its name.
So, consider that you are paying about 25-30 US dollars for the room. What would you expect for that at home? Not much. The DA is better than any $25 room in northam/euro. This is Africa. You'll be safe here, and happy if you are flexible. (oh, one warning. A thief was caught roaming the halls trying every door. Lock your door even when you are in the room). Staff seemed very trustworthy though. Manager Brooke is hoping to improve the place in the near future. He speaks good English!
