Surfside On The Lake Hotel & Suites
Ranked #32 of 89 Hotels in Lake George
Reviewed July 21, 2008

Stayed here the weekend of July 18th with my family. Web site makes it look better. Rugs need replacing. Place is run down and showing its age. They say they are updating but I didnt see any work going on. Nice location right on Canada Street. Walking distance to town. Most staff does not speak English. Not like the 4 or 5 star places we have stayed at, would rate a 1 or 2.

I would like to respond to this review. Yes, we are updating. We have re-decorated many of our rooms. Our cabins, which are our oldest rooms, are being torn down in fall of 2008 to make way for 26 new lake front suites. One question that I have is: why does it matter what language the staff speaks? We hire foreign exchange students because they are dependable workers. They do not quit suddenly like American workers often do.

First let me say that my family and I have stayed at the Surfside before and had a great time - several years ago. We had a totally different experience this time around. First, it took at least 30 minutes to check in and then we were told that our room wouldn't be ready for AT LEAST another hour or so (it was 3:00 at this point, check in is supposedly 2:30). They seem to be telling everyone this, and people were getting frustrated. We decided to let the kids go in the pool while we waited. The pool was really cloudy the entire time we were there - never looked clear. Then they tell you that the property has WI FI internet access, but what they don't tell you is that if you bring your laptop to access the internet there is a charge for that. Also, they say they have paddle boats, but they charge you $25 to do that too. My husband asked where we could get coffee in the morning and they said they had it in their restaurant but you have to pay $1 a cup. Most places at least give you coffee! This place constantly had their hand in our pockets. We went to the office to purchase Great Escape tickets - because they do offer a discount. The person at the desk proceded to sell us 2 adult and 2 children tickets, but my husband questioned it because our children are over 48" tall and we know from going there before that over 48" tall is considered an adult admission price (and they do measure at the gate). The girl didn't know so my husband asked her to check, and we were right. Lake George has a fireworks diplay on Thursday evenings in season and we asked again at the front desk if you can see them from their property rather than going into town and fighting the crowds. The girl said she didn't know! She asked the other girl working the desk and she didn't know either! How can you not know something as simple as that about your property??? Turns out the view was perfect. We also noticed a certain element at the hotel. There was a lot of drinking going on - one woman literally couldn't walk she was so bombed - supposed to be a family place right?? I like a glass of wine or a beer too, but it was out of hand. There were rowdy teenagers at the pool, which made it uncomfortable for families with smaller children. Management walked around the place and never did a thing. Then these boys began throwing rocks on the beach and managed to break someone's boat windshield - nice kids. Our room overlooked the lake, and all we heard were rowdy drunks staying in the motel next door (O'Sullivan's). It really put a damper on our stay, and next time, even though it is convenient, I think we'll stay in Diamond Point. Marine Village in town definitely seemed to have a nicer family atmosphere when we passed it. Guess that's why they had no vacancy, right?

I must admit that I was quite disillusioned after reading the reviews about Surfside, but when I arrived, it was very nice. The room (suite) did have 2 queens in the same room (a little tight) and 2 twins in another room, as expected. The bathroom was surprisingly clean. The only thing that was a turn off was the kitchenette, very dirty and old, but functional. Good thing I brought cleaning supplies. Staff was very helpful in making reservations for dinner and changing the sheets. The breakfast at the Hamilton (the hotel's own restaurant) is not good, so go elsewhere for breakfast. The pool was clean and well heated, my 1 year old enjoyed it very much. The fireworks were spectacular and great view from the beach. The parking is tight, but manageable. Altogether, I would recommend this hotel, especially their packages that included the meals because food in Lake George is very very expensive.

We (2 rooms, 4 people, my parents and my husband and myself) checked in Sunday, June 29 with the original intent on checking out Wednesday, July 2nd. We went with the early summer package deal. It was a great value for the money! Free breakfast (better than most free breakfast buffets), free dinner at 5 local places to choose from. Yes, we had a limited menu about 5 dishes to select from at each place, however, I am extremely picky and there was something on all the menus I would eat. We did the free 1 hour boat tour on the Horicon ($13/person value!), free Go-Carts ($7/person free!), batting cages at a discount, and free 18 hole mini golf ($7/person free!) at a place that was rated the 10 ten mini golf place in the US from the Travel Channel. Plus, we got $15/person off parasailing (which is a really great deal.) We only paid $60 instead of the standard $75. We checked around and each Parasailing business was firm with their $75/person price. We walked all over town every night..nice and close to the night life! The pool was nice and the beach was great as well. Yes, the rooms are dated (it's a motel from like the 50's people!) but they were very clean. The A/C was good and we had a good clean bathroom. We decided to stay an additional night and we were charged $110 per room and got a coupon for the bar. We checked out the bar and had a drink our last night before checking out in the morning. The bar was dated (like it just needed something...) but it had a decent lake view, and the bartender was a sweet girl. We couldn't use our coupons since they were for draft beers or frozen drinks...but it was still nice to check out. The staff was very friendly and accomodating to our needs. The parking lot is really tight and the paint stripes for the parking spaces seem to not make sence (they all go in the same direction!) but we were able to park every night and it was fine...it's was the least of my concerns. We spoke with some locals (we are from Chicago) and they all thought this was an amazing deal as well. I used to spend summers as a child in Lake George and normally stayed at the Tahoe, but this was way better (closer to town.) We will be coming back and we can't wait!

Our family of four visited Lake George and stayed at Surfside on the Lake in late June. Never having visited the area before, we decided not to book rooms prior to arrival, but to take our chances on finding the perfect lakeside lodging. We choose the Surfside because of its private beach and pool area (a MUST for our 8 year old). We were given a lake front "cottage", which is really just a regular motel room which faces the lake. The view was great, but you if you leave the curtains open, you are certainly on display for all the folks cooking on the grill or hanging around the marina area. Also, the cabin does not open to the lake front; you have to walk around the back to get there. Entrance to the "cottage" also requires walking down a flight of steps that should have been replaced several years ago. General upkeep really seems to be an issue here; there was trash scattered around and lots of areas where a little TLC would make all the difference. The room was decorated in an Adirondack style and was fairly clean. We did see a few bugs, and there was a mildew odor, which was explained when we had an afternoon downpour and the water came pouring in under the door. The carpet area around the door remained wet for the rest of our stay. One highlight of our stay was the "laser light show" by the pool, which is evidently held each evening. It is VERY kitsch-y; it looks like old TV antennas that blink. We thought it was quite funny and still laugh about it. One thing that we thought could improve it (Surfide management take note) is choreographing the lights to music. We found the breakfast buffet to be disappointing and overly expensive; the bar was closed during our stay. We wanted to rent a pontoon boat to take out on the lake, and the front desk directed us to a rental company at Bolton's Landing. We went there and had a great time, but later found out we could have rented the same boat at the town's dock three blocks away. It does seem that they could have mentioned that. We had a good time, but I was ready to leave by Sunday morning. I would probably not stay at the Surfside again; after all, I've already seen the laser lights!

When we arrived, our room had dirty tissues and coins in the drawers and under the beds and on the carpet. A large bright orange child's toy was half under the bed and clearly visible. The pillowcases on the extra pillows were soiled. Upon complaint to the front desk, the situation was not rectified. A supervisor should have examined the room to deem it suitable once a complaint was lodged. Lake George vacationers have many resorts to choose from - this type of service is unexcusable.
