Fort William Henry sits high on a bluff with fantastic views overlooking lake George. Originally built by the English in 1755 as an outpost to counter the French, the fort was destroyed by the French and lay abandoned until it's reconstruction in 1954. The visit gives you a great feel for 1755 with information, exhibits, and demonstrations. We had a great conversation with one of the staffers, a young man with the last name of Frazier, who was very knowledgeable and had a passion for the era/fort. It is a shame with the ever advancing liberal education agenda, important history such as the French and Indian War are no longer taught in our schools or just glossed over. There is a nice gift shop as you enter and many discounts are available including one from the Ft William Henry Hotel that sits next to the fort.

Paul Stillman was insanely informative and entertaining, I'm still skeptical of the whole ghost thing but there were lots of other really interesting facts, he really got into the history. Great fun for kids and adult kids like myself. Paul is the best!

We arrived at Lake George too late in the day to do the regular tour of the Fort but my wife thought it would be fun to do the ghost tour. Our guide Paul was an interesting character and a great guide for the ghost tour. He seemed to sincerely believe what he was telling us. I am not sure all of the facts were accurate however. I was and still am pretty skeptical about ghosts in general. Paul was convinced that I captured some pictures of faces and orbs on my cell phone. I think they were mostly dust particles caught by the flash. The next morning we went thru the fort in the light and it was pretty interesting to compare what we saw the night before in the daylight. The best displays were actual artifacts that had been recovered and displayed. Some of the recreated displays were a little hokey. To me the mannequins were spookier looking than the ghosts.

Finding the entrance with no signage was the scariest part of the tour. The guide tried to entertain our group with some past happenings that had been reported to her but that she had never witnessed. Since the fort burned and has been faithfully restored, we hoped to get the odd feeling or glimpse the fleeting image of those that had inhabited the fort from by-gone days. My wife is very receptive to visions and smells but none were present during our tour. Perhaps they were all at the lake watching the fireworks at Bolton Landing which were a surprise and very entertaining.

Staff at the Fort was friendly and very knowledgeable. The original fort was burned to the ground by the French, but the current restoration which was done many years ago appears true to the original.

Skip this hokey spot and go to Fort Ticonderoga instead. It's much more authentic. Fort William Henry is cheesy and right out of some Disney fantasy.

We arrived early in the morning for the first demonstration and were not disappointed. They give veteran discount tickets. They had great displays and re-enactors throughout the fort. Really worth the money.
