The tour is very informative, educational, and fun - but walk this place alone, and you might get a chill....

“Disappointing - just a tacky tourist trap”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2012

My husband and I are history buffs who have visited many forts around the country and we were looking forward to seeing this fort. Grounds and building look beautiful from the outside but once inside we were underwhelmed.

Even as a restored fort it should have been more authentic. The parade area (center of the fort) had construction going on. There were just a couple of costumed employees. The "dungeon" had a concrete floor. The prisoner’s cells were about 3x2 closets that any prisoner could have escaped with one kick. The one display in the dungeon had the most unrealistic "people" in it not to mention the scene was ruined by the plumbing running through the middle of it. In another area was a display of something (I don't even remember what it was) that the termite damaged walls were more impressive than the display.

The top level of the fort had a walk way with lovely views of Lake George but again I was distracted by the uncovered modern conveniences: wires running along the floor of the deck and energy efficient lights –which could have been camouflaged with period lanterns.

The gift shop, with a few exceptions, carried the same tacky items of most tourist traps.
Very over priced for what you get. This place might be fine for people with small children who want to pretend to be living in a fort but for those who really want to see a realistic, quality, educational fort – drive 45 minutes north to Fort Ticonderoga.

Not handicap accessible.

“Very Expensive - but interesting”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2012

A family of 4 is expensive just to do a self-tour. I think it cost us about $55. That was a shocker. Its an interesting Fort which overlooks the Lake. Beautiful views. But extremely pricey.

Enjoyed the tour very much and especially when the children were able to dress and participate. The history was very entertaining.

“Excellent for kids and adults”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 26, 2012

Both of my kids, ages 10 and 12, really enjoyed this, as did I. We learned a lot and had fun doing it.

The tour guide told a very interesting story and the best part is that it was full of fun for the kids. They got to watch a "real" soldier firing a "real" musket who engaged in funny banter with the tour guide, they got to watch a "real" soldier fire a cannonball from a replica of the original cannons (there were original cannons onsite though), and the best part, they got to dress as soldiers, "enlist" in the army, march with toy muskets and perform military manuevers, get a certificate of enrollment in the army, and get a paid for their duty! My kids were THRILLED.

The tour starts was an old-fashioned movie, the kind we watched in school 30 years ago that seem so dated now but gets the info across that it needs to, The tour finished with an opportunity for you to wander through the small museum on your own. It was nothing fancy but taught us a lot.

There is a big gift store which we enjoyed poking around in. Another highlight of the Fort is the incredible views of the lake from the top.

Two thumbs up!!
