Lake Clear Lodge & Retreat
Reviewed November 7, 2005

Never, ever again. Just keep driving until you reach either Lake Saranac or Lake Placid and stay there. We stayed at the lodge for a wedding that was being held there. The lodge is ridiculously overpriced. We were assigned to the King's Canopy room and it was poorly cleaned complete with droppings in the bathtub from what we assume was a mouse. The bar downstairs smells musty. The couches and chairs in the bar area look like they have been purchased at a second-hand store. The lodge's site promises views of the lake. Not so. If you stay in the cottages, you may get a glimpse of the lake, but there weren't lake views from the lodge. We stayed there for two nights...two nights too long for us. Just keep driving.

I was alerted to your remarks regarding the wedding weekend that you attended. I thank you for the opportunity to tell others how my staff went above and beyond that weekend – and helped make – what could have been a nightmare wedding, an enjoyable event for the Bride & Groom. I am not sure that you were aware, that over 100,00 people in the whole upstate NY area (and beyond) were without power after a very powerful windstorm on Thursday. I called the bride and groom letting them know of the situation and suggesting that they not come until Saturday morning. They insisted that the festivities go on as planned even though I told them that it could be hours or days until power was restored – meaning lights and water here. Luckily, our main Lodge is powered from an undamaged main line – all the rest of our lodgings were not. As my small staff and I prepared to serve dinners in the restaurant, we realized that power was not going to be restored before nightfall. With a dining room half full of restaurant patrons and wedding prep to be done, we readied flashlights and lanterns – prepared and started back-up generators, as well as distributed them to the wedding guests in those lodgings without lights and running water. We spent the night passing the phone back and forth trying to get any info on the unlisted phone number to the local power company. After no success, one of my staff volunteered to “run to town” to the power company office. As the others helped shut down the restaurant for the night – we hoped the power company could see fit to come out. They couldn’t promise but we were on the list, like many other people. After hours passed and still no power, a second employee volunteered to go back to the power company office. As my husband was away at a family wedding a distance away, I set my alarm on the hour through the night to go walk the property. Would a customer slip and fall in the dark? Would more trees fall somewhere? Early in the AM – our power was restored – because of the resourcefulness and extra effort from my staff. As the wedding party and guests took showers and prepared for the wedding, we made sure all systems were up and running.

The bride and groom wanted a unique medieval wedding theme – in fact that is why they chose our Old World style - we honored their request of serving platters of sauerbraten and potato Pierogis – understandably, those would probably not be everyone’s theme choice. We are proud to say that, for 40 years these recipes are tried and tested.

I am proud to say that we fulfilled the Bride & Groom's wedding requests and more and we received many compliments from them and their family as they left that Sunday morning.

If you want a relaxing and rejuvinating place to stay, this is it. This a lodge in the Adirondack tradition. The rooms are comfortable and the staff very polite and pleasant. The food is outstanding, with great attention to its careful preparation. Even if you are staying in one of the chalets, you must have dinner at least once to experience the european atmosphere. It was like being in Germany, but everyone speaks English. The lake is beautiful, clear and pristine. We will definitely go back. Great for children too, as the lake is shallow for about 50 ft. from the shoreline, with nice sandy bottom. The bierkeller pub is great for the adults to relax with a glass of German beer or wine while the kids play ping pong or board games.
