Three of us ate here for lunch. We shared hush puppies appetizer, the local organic sausage appetizer, a pulled pork sandwich in a flatbread wrap, and a barbeque brisket sandwich. Each of us was very happy with the flavor and preparation of the food. The slow-cooked pork and the brisket were both juicy and properly flavorful with good crust, the hush puppies were well fried, and the sausage was particularly delicious (and the most expensive of all the items). The sides were similarly tasty for the most part. The mashed potatoes were our favorite, with our preferred amount of garlic, butter, and milk/cream. The coleslaw tasted quite good. The french fries were fried nicely but tasted bland to us, and the warm roasted potato salad was only warmly received by us even though the recipe sounded interesting (the potato had little flavor and the only thing we really tasted was the mustard).
Our order did not come out relatively quickly even for fresh-made food, but we felt it was worth the wait. The portions were large and not expensive. We were filled after eating about 2/3 of our food, and were happy to have plenty of leftovers to eat later in the day. The bill came to about $12 per person, which made the meal even more satisfying.
We liked the simple, homey, woody atmosphere of the place, and it was good and clean. I hesitatingly mention that while our waitress was informative and pleasant, we agreed that the overall service was not quite as good as we would have liked. The restaurant appeared less than 25% full and we thought there were sufficient servers. Though at least two servers were attending to our table and a couple other tables that we paid attention to, we had difficulty getting anyone's attention on the two occasions when we wanted something during the course of our meal (mostly when we saw a server, he or she was making a bee-line to or from the back and not looking in the direction of the customers). We requested three bar drinks from our "secondary waiter" and never got them. Our main server apologized sincerely when we were able to inform her, and she had just finished apologizing sincerely to the party at the next table (we overheard them make two or three separate complaints about receiving the wrong food or food with something wrong with it). I am hesitant to remark negatively on the service because this was our first visit to the restaurant and I appreciate that it might have been a rare "off day" for the staff.
Overall we were all really glad we decided to make an unplanned stop here to eat. We look forward to returning when we pass that way again.
