If you are looking for something different after touring the Senate House, pay a quick visit to R and F Paints. Its only a few blocks outside the stockade district. It is a small business where artist's paints are made by hand. They specialize in encaustics- paints with wax. If you ask, they will give you a tour of the paint making process and their workshop rooms. Or just visit the onsite exhibition gallery that showcases encaustic artists. When we visited this week, there was a Canadian artist with breathtaking landscapes.
The business is located in a semi residential area so street parking is easy. Staff are very friendly and love to talk about their work. There is also a little shop with art materials.
And if you like ceramics- Bailey Pottery Supply is right across the tracks and the owner's contemporary ceramics collection is now on display in their showroom. Just walk right in. There are few places where you can see such great work for free, and no where else in the Hudson Valley.
