“Wonderful Boardwalk to Stroll, Powerwalk, 1 1/2 mile end to end”
Reviewed September 5, 2013

Do you enjoy walking, strolling, jogging or running, then take advantage of Sunken Meadow State Park boardwalk! It is 1 1/2 miles of boardwalk end to end with bathrooms located at two spots.. the main entrance area (also has showers) and the furthest east end). There is also a seasonal food concession located at the main entrance, typical Beach fare, typical over priced food and drink but at least the workers have always been pleasant. The concession at the east end always seems to be closed???
The boardwalk gets the cool ocean (well actually its the LI Sound) breezes and the view is just beautiful. I enjoy the boardwalk all year round and opt to purchase a yearly state pass (I think it was about 65.) There are picnic areas, golfing, a huge updated playground area, hiking trails (greenbelt), a "wedding" pavillion on the west end, a huge jetty that many fish from. You'll see those bathing, strolling, exercising, playing, relaxing, surfcasting, fishing, picnicking, playing volleyball, practicing their parkour (crazy, lol), reading and more. A lovely place for a short or long visit, Enjoy!

“Rocky beach hideway with a nice picnic/field area”
Reviewed August 20, 2013

First some tips:

1. Bring water shoes if you have them, as the beach consists of small pebbles which can be painful on the feet. We found that walking down to the water with our flip flops was helpful.

2. There are two (at least) consession and bathroom areas. The larger one has showers. They are cold, but in a separate room, so you can actually shower and change your clothes to get the sand off. The smaller consession area has bathrooms and food, with outdoor showers.

3. Bring some sporting equipment and a grill. There are several nice large fields, basketball nets and nice playground area for the kids, and lots of nice shade trees. We were one of many families grilling.

4. Get there early for the best spot!

Now the review: We went here with my wife and two small children, along with some extended family. We were pleasantly surprised to find such a spacious beautiful park right next to the beach. The $10.00 fee for the parking/admission per car was very reasonable. The beach is made up of little pebbles which can be painful on the feet, but a pair of water shoes/flip flops took care of it. No real waves on this beach, and the depth of the water is pretty steady for at least 20 feet from the shore, which is nice for beginning swimmers. I will say that I had to intervene in an emergency, since the lifeguards didn't seem to be paying attention to the water, or to the semi-conscious guy that did a face plant next to us (10 feet from the lifeguard stand)

The bathrooms are pretty disgusting, and the showers are under renovation, so perhaps they are going to get better. We did see a lot of staff, and the park area itself, including grounds, playgrounds, and beach were very well kept and clean. There is also a hiking/nature area which we didn't expore. We would definitely go again.

“it's ok”
Reviewed August 17, 2013

After reading nice things about this place, decided to give it a try instead of the usual Robert Moses State Park. The playground area is large and nice for kids. However, I felt that the beach was not as clean as I expected it to be and saw paper napkins in the water which made the water look pretty dirty. I don't think I'll be going back.

The park is a nice place to spend a summer day. It has a calm beach, a golf course, and picnic grounds.

“Great boardwalk!”
Reviewed July 8, 2013

we love to take a stroll on the boardwalk in the afternoon. The beach is well maintained. On weekends it is very crowded so we avoid visiting on those days. Wed. nights is a Lobster Fest and live music. We have not tried the food but the entertainment is always enjoyable.
