Owner description: The royal palaces are decorated with interesting bas-reliefs.

So if you are lucky enough to have found yourself in Benin, The Royal Palace of Abomey is definitely worth the visit. This complex of historical palaces traces the history of the Dahomey empire, ancient ancestors of Danzig (little known fact). The walls of this place are painted in blood and lined with animal bones. There is a mural depicting a wide variety of punishments and tortures, my personal favorite being the clay flute which was shoved up "somebody's bum", as it was translated to us. Oh, and yeah, there is a THRONE OF SKULLS. An actual throne, resting on a bed of skulls. Metal.
Also, FYI, it is a very short distance from the taxi park to the museum, probably even walkable, so don't let zemijohns overcharge for the trip.

It was an interesting visit. Learned quite a bit of history and culture. We had an English-speaking guide from the museum to explain the history and the items displayed inside. There were some unique icons. Too bad that we weren't allowed to take pictures.

one would never expect so much hitory behind the palace walls whicxh are under UNESCO protection; it's more than worthwile to understand the former Dahomey's history
