We stopped off at the Diaspora Auberge for lunch on our way into Ouidah. Located on the beach just off the slave road it has small houses for accommodation (didn;t check these out but they looked OK) with a restaurant/bar located around a large swimming pool. The surrounding palm trees give it an exotic feel. We all ordered the barracuda steak which took a while to be served (our host had to hurry them up, even though we were the only people taking lunch at that time!), but when it arrived it was excellent - very fresh and well cooked. Along with a couple of cold beers, it made for a very relaxing interlude to our journey.

The hotel seems to go by a variety of names including Diaspora Auberge and Le Jardin Brasilien d’auberge de la dispora.

The first problem we had was actually locating a hotel in Ouidah with a website or internet access. Casa del Papa told us they were full, though this seemed strange as there only seemed to be a couple of groups of tourists in town and none were staying there. Whoever designed the website for the diaspora auberge hotel needs to improve their search engine optimisation and potentially buy a new domain name. I eventually got the web address from a travel forum. http://www.bda2.com/.
When I managed to contact them, they replied quickly, unlike many hotels in Togo!

The hotel is situated about 5 miles outside Ouidah town on an unlit sand road (which is actually the historic route of the slaves). Its situated right on the beach but the rooms are set back so none are beach front. it’s a strange lay out with a reception in a large compound on one side of the sand road and the rooms on the other. There are a number of concrete block rooms, some with thatched roof and others with corrugated roofs. They're not exactly pleasant to look at - a prison camp springs to mind! We had a room with A/C - it was large, with a tiled floor , simply furnished and clean with a new mosquito net. There was a cold water shower in the bathroom which was light and clean.

The hotel has a huge pool with diving boards and a restaurant situated around it and facing out to sea. The chairs and tables could have used a coat of paint and as we were the only guests when we stayed there were a lot of staff doing little- if they’d all been given a paint brush they could have spruced the place up in a couple of days!

The staff were generally friendly and helpful though you would struggle without any French language. We ate one meal at the hotel and it got mixed a review-mine was fine, but my partner ordered chicken without much meat. As we were the only guests, and there was no music, it felt a little like were keeping the staff up though they were friendly and efficient.

A consideration if you’re staying here is the distance to town. We rented a motorbike from one of the staff but the riding isn’t easy on sand roads so if you arent confident of driving yourself you may need to rely on moto taxis (though I did see a mini bus with the hotel name on so they may transport you).

One final point is the somewhat strange name. I never did work out what the ‘Brazilian garden’ was. There no traces of a garden as far as I could see, the grounds are mostly sand and with the concrete bungalows arent the nicest to look at. However, don’t let that put you off- the room we had was fine, and as long as you ‘re aware of the distance to town I think this is a good option given the lack of alternatives right in the centre of Ouidah.
