“Nice experience, didn't warrant the high price”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2013

We spent a nice family weekend here and have included highs and lows:

Highs: nice setting, very helpful and friendly staff, pleasant guests, well designed and functional guest spaces stocked with games and seating, nice tents with beautiful new bathroom facilities. We spent a beautiful afternoon canoeing on beautiful Garnet Lake and basically had the entire lake to ourselves.

Lows: The price charged was higher than value received. For a small family, spending over $400 per night we expected more. The appetizers were great but the remainder of the food was average and we often left the meals still feeling hungry. We also would have expected more of an actual meal at lunchtime other than just a sandwich and chips. The quality of the wine served was also very low and a disappointment. There were not enough graham crackers and chocolate for the entire group in the evenings (and the staff had already left the site so nothing could be done). There were also not enough chairs for each guest to sit at the fire. The location of the campsite is also in a very shaded valley and so it is about 10 degrees colder at the site than the sunny parking lot just 50 yards away. We spent each night waking every few hours to rebuild a fire in the tent because it was much colder than we had expected based on weather highs and lows we had researched before. It was clear that all the other guests were also surprised by this. The sites around the area were nothing too spectacular. We hiked to a one of the 'waterfalls' recommended by staff and it really wasn't much more than a large rapid. The beds are also just air mattresses, and I believe the 'queen' is actually a 'full' but I could be wrong. We have stayed at serviced camping experiences all over the world including Africa, Asia and throughout Colorado and California and this was overall a much lower camp site experience and lower nature experience than we have experienced. We expected more at this price.

While we encourage our guests to provide us with feedback, we feel people will make there own judgement reading through the many reviews.

This latest review unfortunately warrants a response.

We don't provide wine or alcohol. Our policy is bring your own. So this guest must have helped themselves to another guests wine unbeknownst to that other guest.

Weather conditions in the Adirondacks can change without notice. While researching highs and lows might provide some insight to what to expect, we cannot control the weather. This is why we provide a client check list covering a range of outdoor gear to bring.

Our Canvas Cabins are heated with wood burning stoves that do require an understanding of their operation. Our staff gives very detailed instructions on how to operate these stoves. Yes, you do need to continue to add more wood to maintain a warm environment throughout the evening.

We have an on site client refrigerator that we stock with a large abundance of smores product. Our past guests have had no problem opening it up and helping themselves. Again, they are informed of all these aspects during their initial tour of Orenda.

Nature is in the eye of the beholder. We cannot control the water levels or rain fall that directly impacts the flow of our rivers and streams and waterfalls.

Orenda is an "Authentic Adirondack Back Country Experience", where our guest are given access to an amazing region of the Adirondack State Park, all the while being provided with comfortable accommodations, healthy, hearty meals and use of our all our outdoor equipment.

The beds are queens, not full.

We needed to get far away from our everyday life, and we were so very fortunate to have discovered Camp Orenda. Our four days there felt like weeks away: no phone calls, no TV, no cars or boats or planes ... just tranquility, natural beauty, good food, and great company around the campfire. (Ok, relax, they do have wifi... you don't have to be THAT far off the grid if you don't want to!)

John, the manager/caretaker, was wonderful and saw to our every need. He knew all the trails and lakes and ponds where we could go exploring, boating, or just walking. And anytime we needed anything, he was there with it (who knew we could go through that much firewood?).

David, the owner, was gracious, thoughtful, and entertaining. He knows so much about the area's history, and was happy to spend time with us by the campfire telling stories of the colorful characters that can be found throughout the Adirondacks.

We're not hard-core campers, but we longed for the simplicity of a campsite. Orenda gave us just what we needed: enough comfort and security to relax and rest (warm comfy bed in the tent, wood stove to keep things toasty), yet close-enough contact with nature to make us feel that we had truly been "into the woods".

We cannot find the words to express how great this trip was; you just need to experience it for yourself. Bring wine (enough to share with other campers, for they will surely share theirs with you), sturdy shoes, romance, and a sense of adventure. You will not be disappointed, and you will return again and again, as we intend to do.

Room Tip: Hemlock is the coolest tent, up on the hill looking over the whole campground. Mill Creek is the mos...

We just got back from two nights at Orenda. The staff was gracious and welcoming, the camp was comfortable, and the food was tasty. But the best part was being in the middle of nowhere and not having to worry about a thing. Our food was all cooked for us, even a picnic lunch. All trails and boating and other options were clearly displayed for us to choose from. They even put together a backpack with water bottles because we forgot our own gear. It was so relaxing to just be able to do whatever we wanted, with everything taken care of. A very restful break from ordinary life!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Mill Creek tent so we got to listen to the burbling brook all night.

We just spent two nights at Camp Orenda, and loved it. The cabins and everything else were just as beautiful as the pictures/video on their website. You could hear the creek all day and night, and it is so nice and relaxing. All the food especially what was cooked on open fire was delicious. The cabin was very comfortable and we slept really well.

But what made our stay very special was their hospitality. Our daughters have diet restrictions, and both David and Angie made sure they enjoyed their meals just like other guests did. David made gluten free pancakes that our daughters loved. Angie made gluten free pizza dough for them, and it was the BEST GF pizza dough we had ever tasted. By the way, all other regular pizza (many different kinds) was really delicious. My husband and I LOVED the pizza with homemade (by Angie) pesto!!! David and Angie were just genuinely kind. They made many other gluten and dairy free dishes and always said things like, “If I made this like XYZ, would they like it?” or “Let me know if you girls like it, if not, I will make something else”. Thank you, David, Angie, and John for helping us make another great memory.

The only reason we rated it 4 instead of 5 is the price. With the additional fees, we paid $600 per night as a family of four which we would definitely do it again, but it will be $800 per night next year as our kids will be older. $800 per night makes us think perhaps we should try a different place next time, although this place is unique and we understand they need to charge guests certain amount to keep it as quiet and private as is with only 13 guests maximum. In fact we were the only people at the camp one afternoon when we relaxed by the fire while other guests were gone for their day time activities. Overall, Camp Orenda is a beautiful place with genuinely caring hosts.

Hate sleeping on the ground? Me too. I'm not a natural camper, but at Camp Orenda, they have lovely canvas tents with queen beds, and little woodstoves to keep you cozy. This secluded grove is a beautiful place for all kinds of travellers - families, couples. Orenda is purposefully small with a maximum of thirteen guests. Staff are excellent. Despite being relatively remote, there's lots of things to do in the area (fish, hike, swim) and the staff are ready with maps and suggestions to get you on your way. We had a very relaxing stay and would definitely consider returning.

Beautiful setting with many comforts! We enjoyed the campfire and the tents and beds were so comfortable and cozy. The candles and torches were lovely in the evening. The shower did seem to have problems with water pressure. Bathhouse was a great addition! The food was average and I agree with the previous review that for the price I expected more. Fresh fruit on the table was spoiled, milk was curdled and portions were small. Brownies for dessert and definitely not enough marshmallows for the group. Breakfast was disappointing. Also, people travel a distance to arrive for 1:00 p.m. check-in and no lunch available, so don't come hungry! For the price we felt there should be three hot, generous meals a day. It was a fun experience and everyone was very nice, but hope they make some improvements.

Spent three nights, absolutely stress free, surrounded by Mother Nature at her best, this place will take you away better than Calgon. The tents are private and comfy. The ambience is pure outdoors: woods, stream, rocks, birds. The fire filled the camp with that special aroma all day and night. Never had to worry about cooking, packing equipment, washing dishes, hauling trash. This was all done for you. Staff are great at making your stay what you want it to be. John had suggested the thirteenth lake hike to peaked mountain, which was PERFECT. Spent another day canoeing on Garnet Lake, equipment and packed lunches provided. Our golden retriever spent hours playing in the stream, chasing sticks the kids threw. Met wonderful people which led to interesting conversations around the campfire. For the maximum effect of this fantastic getaway, leave your electronics at home or at least leave them in the car.
