2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 10, 2010

This is the second of three hotel reviews in our three-day tour of JFK hotels: The Holiday Inn Express.

Dingy hotel. Dingy lobby. Dingy room. A big, hostel-like dining area by the vending machines for families with take-out. No restaurant. No pool.

On the plus side: the front desk staff was very nice and attentive. And they packed us free snacks for breakfast to take to the airport. Bonus!

I hope to never set foot in this hotel again but it served its purpose: shelter in a storm.

We thank you for your comments and feedback.
As you stated, our front desk staff is very "attentive", and will do everything within their power to make your stay as pleasant and joyful as possible.
They are well trained and knowledgable of the local area.
Thank you.

The best news about this hotel is the price, under $100 before taxes for close-by JFK, and free parking if you have a car. It looks good from the outside - newer HI Express. But this place bears little resemblance to what I would have I come to expect from a Holiday Inn Express as a very frequent HIE guest around the country.

If you don't have a car, and you need to eat, you are out of luck. There's just nothing around here at all, not even a convenience store within walking distance. Even a McDonald's is a good 5 miles + drive. Best bet would be to take the free hotel shuttle to JFK's international terminal and have a meal out there.

Funny layout - to get to the floors above the lobby you have to take an elevator (unless you don't have luggage) down one floor to the breakfast area and then take a different elevator to the higher floors. Very small rooms - king room about half the size of most similar HI Express properties, but I imagine this is because it's NY City and hotels have to cram as much into their space to survive.

The issue I had was with the condition of the rooms, at least the room I was in. Various marks on the walls and the ceiling, from what appeared to scrapes or marks when things were thrown at or scraped the surfaces, and a strange red stain on one of the walls. Black marks all over the carpet. The bathroom door look like it had been through a war - stains all over it that appeared to have been attempted to be cleaned but couldn't be removed, and what looked like writing or crayon scrawls, or, gasp, grafitti of some sort. It looked really bad. Shower head pulling out of the wall of the bathtub. Furniture full of little dings where it had been either hit or kicked. And my favorite, on the top of the desk where all the plugs are, it was held together with a bunch of scotch tape. Pictures posted to document.

And lest I forget the poor tv reception - local channels (CBS/ABC/etc) full of snow and barely watchable - which I why I missed the Super Bowl. Was on in the lobby fine.

None of the above was major in its own right, but it all added up to the feeling of being in a much cheaper quality motel. And it is troubling with the lack of attention to detail, cleaning and maintenance has piled up so badly in just one room.

These problems were reported to the front desk operations person and I sincerely hope they took the information seriously.

We always try to price affordably for the highly-priced JFK market area. Finding a hotel in this very high-traffic area under $100 like we were , and with our level of service and product is difficult.
It is unfortunate that this reviewer did not find value in anything what-so-ever.
It appears to me that they were slightly disgruntled that they had to pay unforseen cost for a hotel during a snow storm and their flight was cancelled. They would not have been happy paying $15 let alone $100.
However, we appreciate the feedback.
Thank you.

This is the far better option of the two Holiday Inn Properties at JFK.
The room was nice, with free WiFi
Free Breakfast, nothing special, but Adequate.
There is nothing much in the area, but at $89.00 plus tax, it is good value for the standard.
The only down side, the shuttle back to the airport in the mornings is only once an hour.

We stayed here upon a return from Israel, Needed to recover from the trip and flight, This hotel proved to be a great place to do just that. The room was immaculate and not skimpy in size. The amenities were nice and as stated in their promotional literature. The continental breakfast was great - not just a roll and coffee. The staff was friendly and helpful. The shuttle to and from JFK was great. We have nothing but good memories of our stay here. Should we ever need to stay close to JFK on subsequent trips, we would choose no other hotel. A great bargain considering the price, the proximity to JFK, and the quality of the hotel.

We live in NY's Hudson Valley and spent a day in the city with our young daughter before a very early flight to the carribean the next morning out of JFK (in early Dec). Rather then driving in the middle of the night we decided to stay near the airport. After pricing about, we opted for this Holiday Inn Express at JFK and were very pleased. Quick efficient check in, as well as assistance with a cable for our laptop (our wi-fi card was broken). I did sign up for the rewards program but did not receive anything for my three year old at check-in as another reviewer described - however that's not a dealbreaker, just would have been a nice touch. The room, two double beds on the third floor, was smallish but very comfortable and very clean. It was modern and thoughtfully put together and the beds were very comfy. I would strongly recommend this hotel to anyone needing a quick stay - you just can't beat the value and the proximity to the airport. I would even recommend staying here if you want to see the city for a few days and not pay city prices (if you are ok with driving about). It really is sooo reasonable for what you get! However due to lack of space, I would not recommend it for say an extended stay with small children who need a lot of space to move around in. Otherwise, stay here, get your rest and enjoy your trip - we sure did :)

We had a brief stay at the hotel. Getting to the hotel with a navigator from the airport is tricky !!! We drove first to the Holiday Inn and then had to make compromising lane changes on the highway entry just to get to the parking lot which was on a highway entry ! Hotel staff at reception was really "cold" but otherwise the stay was ok.

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments regarding your stay.
Our 24hour free shuttle bus to and from JFK airport is a very much appreciated convenience for most of our guests, and we are happy to see that worked out well. As noted in several previous responses from many other guests, our front desk guest service representatives are extremely warm and friendly.
Thank you.

Nice clean well kept property. No frills. Shuttle to airport. The staff went out of their way to accomodate me while staying there. Helped with Fed-Ex shipping supplies. Picked me up from the sister hotel. Efficient service to the train stop at the airport.

If you have to stay in this area, this is an okay place to stay.

No dining places in walking distance, though.
