“Sorry we couldn't stay longer”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 1, 2013

A couple of touring Brits en route from Cape Cod to Canada, our agent had booked us into 2 hotels for one night stops. After a disappointing night in Albany, La Tourelle was a great treat. Super dinner in the steakhouse and super breakfast in the bistro. If ever we have the chance we'd like to stay longer.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights, midweek in September. The staff was very friendly. Our queen room did not have much of a view (we were in a corner which gave us a partial view of the grounds and partial view of the back wall of the hotel) however it was spacious and comfortable. The hotel is starting to show its age, especially in the bathroom however everything was clean. We walked from the hotel grounds down through Buttermilk Falls State Park which was a beautiful hike. We ate breakfast in the dining room one morning and it was large and delicious. The waiter (can't remember his name - sorry) was fantastic. We also enjoyed the lemon ice water, coffee and cookies in the lobby along with the afternoon happy hour at the lobby bar.

Whenever I need to get away, I immediately check availability at La Tourelle. I have stayed there several times and have never been disappointed. The ambience of the lovely spacious rooms and the pleasant staff is always a treat. Since I often travel with my small dog for company, it is wonderful to find comfortable lodging that allows well behaved dogs in some of the rooms. The breakfast room and wine tasting are an added pleasure, as are the surrounding grounds. I have tried the August Moon spa and enjoyed the amenities there...excellent massage team! For me, it is well worth the five hour drive to have a comfortable and relaxing time...

Potentially this hotel should have been a jewel. I was traveling cross country with my family on an 18 day road trip. La Tourelle was our first stop. The day was beautiful and the location not bad. Just off a busy road it is far enough back to work. It sits on the edge of a sweet little reserve that was pleasant to walk around. Our room however was warehouse like. It was dusty, with cracking paint, poorly caulked tub, jimmy rigged shower handle and stained worn towels. If this had been a cheap motel it would have been acceptable. With a price tag over $300 a night it was outrageous. The staff though pleasant was not helpful. When we told them about the towels they brought a pile of new out of the package towels. That was better but didn't make up for the other problems. There was a wedding going on that took much of their attention. Things were loud but did quiet down at the hour promised. Beds were comfortable but the general experience was flat. There is a nice spa attached to the hotel that is well run and quests are encouraged to use it.
Mostly this could be with better management and upgrading a decent hotel. We did fill out a card describing our experience and like everything else this went unaddressed. This is not a luxury hotel and certainly not worth the price.

Our group of seven adults enjoyed a long weekend family reunion in this beautiful, quiet, comfortable resort. While the website gives the reader the sense that the property is isolated out in the countryside, it is in fact just off a two-lane roadway in the rolling hills outside of Ithaca, NY. Ask for rooms that face away from the road and toward the valley --- all four of our rooms faced that way, and it was possible to completely forget about the road. The nicest feature was the rooms themselves --- large comfortable beds, spacious and nicely decorated, great bathrooms, small private balcony with two comfortable chairs overlooking the property and the hills beyond. Great access to hiking trails down to lakes and waterfalls. Close enough to downtown Ithaca to give easy access when desired, far enough to feel outside the city as well. Nice selection of wines in a wine-tasting session in the lobby two evenings. Our only meal on the premises was Sunday brunch --- very tasty, with service a little slow. Three of the women in our group enjoyed the spa, and would rate it somewhat above average. Service from the desk staff was friendly and attentive, though not overly so. A wedding was being held during the weekend we were there, and didn't interfere with our group at all. This resort met our needs perfectly, and we certainly plan to return. In fact, my wife and I would return just as a couple for a romantic getaway!

Room Tip: Ask for a room that faces away from the highway

First time guests- and already have made reservations for our return. Attentive staff upon check in (and thruout the reservation process on the telephone). Very nice lobby cafe with friendly service and very good food. Decent spa- and much better than one would expect in this area. Excellent feature restaurant on the grounds.
Stayed in the yellow barn suite (top notch) and also one of the king-bed guest rooms with fireplace (wonderful). Nice complementary happy hour in the lobby daily. Adjacent to state park with falls and hiking trails.

We just returned from a weekend at La Tourelle and we really liked our stay. We were helping our daughter move into her sorority at Cornell and wanted to get away from the chain hotel syndrome that plagues the Ithaca area. This was a welcome choice. We had eaten at both John Thomas and the Bistro before and they did not disappoint us on this stay either. It was really nice to be away from the hustle and bustle of move in weekend at Cornell and only be a few miles away. Even nicer that we could enjoy a good dinner and breakfast and brunch without having to fight the crowds. Our room was very, very large with two king size beds and a great view of the grounds. The beds were very comfortable and the hotel offered wine and cheese when we were checking in and complimentary coffee and tea and water as well.

Adjacent to Buttermilk Falls and a mile and a half from Ithaca college, the location provided great walking, jogging and hiking. The hotel even offered to pick us up from the park after a four mile run. Purity Ice Cream is walking distance away and the wineries are nearby as well. We highly recommend this property when traveling to Ithaca....it is the only one with a personality! The rooms and public areas are nice and "inn" like......decor is not new, but the hospitality, food, location and grounds more than make up for the charming "older" furnishings. If you enjoy bed and breakfasts and inns, give this property a try! We will absolutely be back!
