I flew into up state NY from Australia without reservation and arrived late. The owners Kenn and Madeline couldn't have been more welcoming. My room was generous and well appointed. I had a sense of being in somebody's home rather than a box. Madeline's breakfasts were just delicious. I hope to work out the secret ingredient of the "Columbia Juice". Very tropical and refreshing.

Unlike many of our fellow guests who were visiting Cornell or Ithaca College and/or their children, my spouse and I chose Ithaca because of the proximity to Seneca and Cayuga lakes and all of the respective wineries and state parks. In our search for an elegant space to rest during our stay, we found Inn on Columbia.
We chose the Gazebo for our 5-night stay. It was the perfect space for the two of us. The bed was very comfortable... the large pillows and soft linens were delightful. The bathroom was spacious and we took advantage of the spa tub as well as the shower. The full size shampoo, soaps and lotions were also great to have available instead of the dinky travel-size disposables. The light robes and thick bath towels were a pleasant touch.
Despite the fact that this week was one of the hottest of the summer thus far, the window a/c kept the room very cool, providing a welcome retreat for us in the early afternoons. One wish we had was for more than one chair to enjoy the evenings (and our wine) on the surrounding deck.
We were in walking distance of many shops and restaurants at Ithaca Commons and the area was generally quiet in the evenings. On-street parking was safe and accessible. Our hosts were terrific in providing maps of the surrounding area and recommendations for restaurants and activities.
The crown jewel of the entire stay was breakfast each morning. Every guest had the option to choose from a selection of light, sweet and savory options which changed each day. This was no kitschy continental breakfast! The coffee and juice were fantastic, the table settings were simple and elegant and the food was incredibly delicious. Madeline is an excellent chef and her passion for creating a remarkable culinary experience for guests is obvious.
Overall, our stay @ Inn on Columbia met and, at times, exceeded our expectations. Should we visit again, a stay @ Inn on Columbia will be part of our itinerary.

During our first trip to Ithaca, we decided on the Inn on Columbia as they had a Winter Special and were within walking distance to the theatre we had tickets for. We were very pleased with our stay there. The room was elegantly decorated as was the shared areas. The kitchen and baths were spotless and the breakfast was delivered daily and was an assortment of pastries/scones and fruit.

We were a bit leery about the B&B experience but our hosts gave us directions and recommendations and let us do our own thing. They made it clear that if we needed anything that we should let them know.

We were pleased with everything about this B&B and especially loved it's proximity to the nightlife and attractions of the Ithaca Commons area.

What a wonderful find in the center of Ithaca. Kenn and Madeline Young have found a way to create a stylish bed and breakfast that is warm and inviting. They go out of their way to ensure your time in Ithaca is well spent from recommending restaurants and making reservations to understanding your interests and pointing you in the right direction. Breakfast is a fabulous selection of choices that suit everyones' tastes--fresh muffins and warm apple cider, fritatas, pancakes, even Vegan selections served with flair and flavor. You will also find your breakfast table is filled with interesting fellow travelers and intelligent breakfast conversation.

My husband and I chose the Inn on Columbia for a romantic weekend getaway, and this B&B delivered on almost every point but one: the beds, but more on that in a second. First, let me say that the Inn is truly an ideal B&B. It's location can't be beat as it's close to the downtown area but far enough away (~2-3 blocks) so that you won't be woken up by loud music from the Commons. The "Villa" where we stayed was immaculate and the Inn's renovation strikes the perfect balance between historic home and modern ammenities. While we would have liked a hot breakfast, we booked the room with the knowledge that the owners deliver a "breakfast basket" of cold items (think continental-style with muffins and fruit) every morning, and we loved it! The basket allowed us to have "breakfast in bed," and we were able to take what we didn't eat as snacks for use during our hikes around the Ithaca gorges during the day. We found the owners to be extremely helpful, providing us with suggestions for dinner, a great map of the area, and even some coupons for the local wineries.
Now the downside: the bed in our room was hard as a rock, and the pillows were like flat little boards. You may think I'm being dramatic, but trust me; I'm not. I actually tend to like harder beds, but this one was so hard that I actually woke up in pain every morning. If we had camped at one of the state parks and slept on the ground in our sleeping bags, we would have gotten more sleep. The bed was THAT HARD. It's truly a shame, because the owners clearly have put a lot of expense, time, and thought into renovating the property and creating a good experience for their guests. I can't imagine, then, why they would skimp on the last detail, a great mattress and pillows, especially when the central point of a B&B is for people to sleep! The duvet and its insert also seemed kind of "lead-like" instead of fluffy and plush like you might find in a hotel. If we had gotten a great deal on the Inn and had paid, say $99 a night, I doubt that I would even bring up this issue, but at $165/night, we could have stayed at the Hilton downtown or one of the other hotels and gotten a good night's sleep as well, something that is essential on a vacation when you want to relax. All in all, I would have rated the Inn on Columbia as a 5-star B&B, but due to the unfortunate bedding and mattress choices, I don't think that we will stay here again the next time we visit Ithaca, nor would I recommend it to anyone.

Before staying at this beautiful inn, my husband and I were wary of B&B's. Inn on Columbia provides surprising privacy with the friendly attention of a B&B. We have stayed here four times over a period of three years- at the Mansion, Carriage House, and Gazebo. The well-appointed and beautifully designed rooms are the perfect retreat for urbanites like us. The breakfast consistently goes beyond all expectation, and Madeline and Kenn are wonderful hosts. We look forward to our next visit.

This year was our third, with our Westies, at the Inn. Going to Ithaca & staying at the Inn on Columbia has become our traditional "family holiday" with our "fur kids." However, we don't stay at the Columbia just because it's dog freindly, (or because the resident German Shepard "Sophie" is so cute). Our hosts, Kenn & Madeline, are both gracious & accomodating. They create an ambiance that is at once welcoming, & elegant (& Madeline's breakfasts are something you'd expect to find in New York City, so be sure not to miss one!). With several properties & room types to choose from, you'll be hard pressed to find a better place from which to explore the Finger Lakes region.
