“Awesome ending to start our Mardis Gras weekend”
Reviewed March 2, 2014 via mobile

After a day at the wineries 4 of us, 2 couples dressed in our Mardis Gras garb stopped at Maxies for bite to eat to end our evening. The wait was reasonable, which gave us an opportunity to enjoy some oysters & clams. Our meals, shrimp n grits, steak, bbq shrimp and shooters were terrific. We had an excellent server, Megan & the whole staff were fun and gracious. We look forward to our return trip here soon. Thank you all!

“Let the good times roll!”
Reviewed March 2, 2014

We ended our Mardi Gras wine tour with a trip to Maxie's. They didn't let us down! Started with raw oysters and clams while waiting for our table. Our server grated fresh horse radish for our plate - yum! We came in to have fun, we had our beeds and masks, we joked with patrons and the staff - everyone was so friendly! Dinner started with BBQ shrimp and delicately fried oysters. Our meals were wonderful! Fall off the bone ribs, carolina pulled pork, spicy shrimp and grits with taso ham gravy, beef tenderloin. The grits are stone ground and cooked with TLC! We love this place and always plan a visit when we are in Ithaca. It's crowded, yes, but it adds to the laid back friendly atmosphere. Can't wait to go back! Thanks to the staff for making our evening special they went above and beyond!

“Crowded and noisy”
Reviewed February 23, 2014

My fiance and I went to Maxie's on a Saturday night. Big mistake. There was nowhere to park nearby, the place was packed and we were told we'd have a 35 minute wait. We were lucky to only wait about 10 minutes and were seated in a dining room that was packed. The servers were clearly having trouble getting through the aisles.

We are both vegan and I was happy to find there were six vegetarian entrees on the menu. Unfortunately, most were not vegan and not even able to be "veganized". Our server was very, very knowledgeable and helpful and was able to steer my fiance away from the fried tomatoes that were dipped in egg whites.

I had the BBQ tofu with a side of spinach and rough-cut fries. The tofu was mediocre but the spinach was full of garlic and really delicious. The fries were excellent as well and I was happy to find a bottle of malt vinegar on the table. My fiance had the vegetarian jambalaya which he said was nothing special.

We would have liked to have lingered over a second drink but the room was so noisy from the number of diners that we decided to go elsewhere for a cocktail.

Maybe your experience will be different if you're an omnivore but we won't be back.

“A nice surprise”
Reviewed February 17, 2014

Although we were told that we did not need reservations on a Sunday evening, the restaurant had a waiting line. We were taken right away to the bar and ordered well made Lemon Drops. Our table was ready almost immediately. This Cajun restaurant has been around for quite a few years and this was only my second visit. This is due in part, to the fact that it is always busy and the physical space is cramped. However, these drawbacks are offset by the decent live band. Our orders arrived within an acceptable time frame and were well prepared. I had the jambalaya and my dinning companion ordered the crab cakes. We also ordered the crab and corn chowder, yet the waiter overlooked this part of the order. When we saw the size of the entrees, we canceled the chowder. Our waiter made it up to us by giving us free desserts. I had the banana (real banana slices) chocolate coconut pie which was filling and my dining companion ordered the chocolate cake. All in all a nice surprise with great wait staff. The major draw back being the cramped feeling of tables so close together that even the wait staff have to plan their strategy about how to get the food to the tables.

“Loved the Food and Atmosphere”
Reviewed February 5, 2014

We've been to Maxie's several times in the past and have always enjoyed our visit. The oysters (especially the half off special) are worth getting and remind us very much of the ones we enjoyed at ACME Oyster House in New Orleans---Big Compliment There! The ambiance is super and the service/food is worth coming back for. I always get extra corn bread because it speaks for itself and sops up all that is leftover on your plate--which will be sent back to the kitchen clean! Thanks to the wait staff for the service and to the chef or the grand grub, over and over.
