This restored theater is a wonderful venue. Great acoustics. There is a small concession stand. Restrooms are updated but if you are a woman get ready- as usual- to wait in line, because there aren't too many stalls. The people who work there are super friendly. Just a fantastic place for a show, and located right in Ithaca Commons so there are plenty of opportunities for dining beforehand or dessert/drinks afterward. Since this is on the Commons you will need to park and walk to the theater. Not sure how handicapped accessible it is- you'd need to call the box office to find out.

There is nothing like a show at the State. From the celestial ceiling mural, to the medieval decor and the creaky seats...its an experience you won't forget. The show you see will take a second seat to the theatre itself...at least on your first few visits. On occasion I've been wandering about the commons with an out of town friend and snuck into the theatre when a show was letting out to show my guest the space. Everyone has a childlike awe of the magic and a feeling of being transported to an enchanting romantic mythical time.

Beyond the physical space, the State has some wonderful performances. Some are crap of course and I can't imagine who actually attends them. Dan Smalls, who should have his own mural or statue in town, brings some wonderful acts. I've seen Neko Case and Kelly Hogan, Garrison Keillor and Built to Spill on their stage.

My only suggestion is to add more stalls in the ladies room. There is plenty of room to add 3 more stalls. The lines are horrendous and you're serving alcohol.

Great place for a date!

I have been to concerts, plays and comedy shows over the past ten years at the State Theatre. It's a lovely venue to see a show at. I wish they would get more headline acts. I've seen Brian Regan there twice and he is awesome! Also the Running to Places plays are wonderful. Beware there is no air conditioning or heat so dress appropriately. The box office is convenient but parking can be difficult.
