“Fun place to go.”
Reviewed August 23, 2012

I have been here several times over the years. It's so relaxing to hear the birds through the outdoor microphone that's piped into the building. Great gift shop and lots to learn.

“Lovely place to visit”
Reviewed August 22, 2012

Sapsucker Woods is the wooded/wetland area surrounding Cornell University's Laboratory of Ornithology. The building offers a large room with chairs and a huge glass wall with the sounds of the lake in front of it piped in by means of microphones outside. Of particular interest is a large dead tree in the lake that houses a Great Blue Heron's nest. The nest has 2 nest cameras mounted in place to view the nest close up. Thousands of people all over the world tuned in online to watch the eggs hatch and 5 nestlings grow and fledge; it was an amazing experience. The surrounding woods have well maintained paths and boardwalks and have good maps so one doesn't get lost. The wetlands attract mosquitos, so bring repellant. The observatory also contains a delightful store, Wild Birds Unlimited, selling birding supplies, bird books, children's toys with bird and nature themes, binoculars, etc.

“Bird lovers go there, please!”
Reviewed August 21, 2012

I have never seen such a variety of birds together and flying around the outside lab. You can have info about those birds with the local staff(mostly researchers and students from Cornell). It is relaxing to be there. I love it!

“This place puts you in a fantastic state of mind”

There is no special season to walk in these woods. Of course, Fall shows Nature as its best colors. It leads you to a communion with Nature. You can see deer, woodchucks, chipmunks, squirrels, red cardinals, blue jays just near you. Walk carefully for you may frighten those critters.

“A Pleasant Afternoon Visit”
Reviewed August 6, 2012

Our family enjoys visiting here for a relaxing afternoon, spring through fall. Bring cameras and binoculars. A limited number of binoculars are avaiable from the front desk. Bring insect repellent: the wetland attracts more than birds. If it begins to rain, you can slip inside the building and watch the birds' reactions through the large viewing windows.
